This was really powerful and extremly inspiring! I’m so happy to have spent such an amazing weekend at Schloss Imbshausen with these wonderful women!

And I’m so grateful that this very important community that @elenora.pertz and @annaebrashear created, grew so much since the first time I was there 1,5 years ago!

Last weekend I had the pleasure of documenting the @liedtheway workshop for female pianists in the art song community. The workshop was held at a 19th century Schloss in Lower Saxony and brought together women from across Europe and the US.
It was a privilege to witness these artists connect and exchange. I sometimes put down my camera and just listened to discussions - those both scheduled and informal. No surprises that the subjects covered apply to any woman working in the creative industries...or any industry for that matter.
Thank you @elenora.pertz for inviting me to be there. More photos to come!

From their debut duo album ‘dream.risk.sing’, @samanthacrawfordmusic and @lanabode present Michele Brourman’s powerful ‘My Daughters’.

‘Bella’ and ‘Justice’, named at the beginning, are nods to feminist campaigner Bella Abzug and the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, as well as to an ideal of beauty and truth. The musical setting was conceived with particular care by Brourman, and is in a frictionless major key, sincere in its optimism. As such, it is a song of hope. In order to take the risk, women need to dream – and sing – of a better world.

My daughters will be Bella and Justice
With curly hair cascading down
In shades of ash and blondish-brown
Like mine was once, before I dyed it red
To try and look like someone else instead

My daughters will be singers and sailors
And when I’m old, they’ll sing to me
Like Sirens on a raging sea
Their songs will rise above all light and sound
And lift my sinking ship to higher ground

Like me, they’ll dress in black-on-black
No nonsense, and no turning back!
And, yes, they’ll sing, but also shout
They won’t give up, they won’t give out
They’ll fight the fires of Hell that I could never tame
And then ignite the righteous light of truth’s eternal flame

My daughters will be rebels and readers
And when my eyes no longer see
They’ll read me my old poetry
So when it’s time to find that sweet release
I’ll pass my pen to them so that the poetry won’t cease
And knowing this….
Knowing this will let me go in peace

dream.risk.sing: elevating women’s voices - the recording is released today! It has been a total pleasure and privilege to work with Samantha Crawford and Lana Bode on this project, where they commissioned me to compose three new songs about women’s experiences in the workplace, with texts specially commissioned by writer Nicki Jackowska. @delphian_records @birdsong_publishing @harrisonparrottgroup #NickiJackowska #contemporarymusic #contemporarysong #contemporarypoetry #feminist #feministsong

Conceived by soprano @samanthacrawfordmusic and pianist @lanabode, dream.risk.sing features music by Judith Weir, Helen Grime and Florence Price, with the aim of telling often unheard stories about womanhood primarily through women’s own words and music. The album brings together songs about adolescence, bodies, love, work and legacy, while a palpable thread running throughout reminds listeners of the constraints on freedom that still exist in women’s lives.

Rehearsals are in full swing. We are not just performing songs by female composers in our performance. Actually, we are creating a (fleeting) archive and question the canon of Western music. A lot of work!
