Bubba's Backyard Ultra 2026

Like a family reunion for trail runners in New England, and everybody's favorite DNF
16
It’s been 1 year since I completed the Long Trail and also about 1 year since I posted anything.

The past year has been full of highs and lows: big success, frustrating injury, and plenty of perceived failure. Through it all I’ve been so lucky to be surrounded by some of the absolute best people. Both family and friends, old and new, have made the journey so much more enjoyable and at times, simply bearable.

No big efforts, life updates, or finish lines (of my own) but plenty of love, laughs, and time spent outdoors. Here’s some favorite moments from a year well spent and a reminder that building community and caring for each other is just as important as chasing FKTs 💛

Anyone who tells you to “never meet your heroes” needs to reevaluate who their heroes are.

Short story, long: Andy has been an acquaintance of mine since I started getting into trail running in the NE. We met at Patch a few years back, and all I could recall of him was his massive volumes of stoke and kindness he brought to the race. We’d cross paths here and there, maintaining a parasocial relationship online in between races. After a fun rematch at the GATR, I saw some pics of him with Tara on the LT scoping the course. As Caley and I were waiting to hear back from the Rascal and the crew, who were overwhelmed with all that goes into a FKT, I shot him a message to see if he could hook us up with a spot on the team. Several hours later, I got a message from Rascal: “Andy let me know that you’re a stupid fast mountain runner who is also one of his favorite people :)”

We’ve shared no more than a few hours of conversation in passing at races, and all of a sudden he was vouching for me to the greatest runner in the world. Next thing I know, Scotty B and I were prancing through Hazen’s Notch and Andy and I are sharing our first miles together that were not in competition, all alongside the greatest runner in the world.

During the blip of time we spent in the mountains of VT, I met so many legendary figures; people I’ve heard of but never met or folks I didn’t even know were out there. And we were all there to help someone else make history. Someone we all wanted, more than anything, to make history. A hero we should all looked up to.

Caley and I hiked out from the terminus to the car, just behind Andy, but I never got to see him before we left. Choking back tears, I left him a note on a paper towel expressing how much his kindness meant to me. To this day, I struggle to think of this long weekend without shedding a tear of fondness for how important, loved, and whole these people made me feel. Scott and I hashed out some thoughts on the matter sometime in the middle of the effort, with him remarking “this is one of those moments you know you will remember forever.”

I just need to take a second. I’ve been on fire this year, and none of it would have been possible without my amazing friends and family. There are too many of you to list here, but you know who you are and you’re probably tagged below anyway. Let’s take a look back at what we’ve accomplished in 2025…

1. Learned how to skate ski and skied 77 miles at Last Nordic Skier Standing for a 🥈
2. Had the honor of racing @jess_crandall again at the first ever Sleeping Giant 50km, notching another 🥈
3. Fucked around and had a blast at Traprock 50km, finished just 15 minutes behind the legendary @lilagaudrault for another 🥈
4. Ran the CUT112 route, supported by a crew of badass local ladies (plus Marty), and raised $1800 for @front.line.foundations 💰⛑️
5. Took back the Women’s Unsupported FKT on the MSGT, beating my own time on the route by more than 3 hours 👑
6. Had a rather spectacular DNF on the Whites 100 💀
7. Beat my own Pemi Loop time by 3 hours (9 hours 12 minutes) 🏁
8. Finally found the top of the podium at Jigger Johnson 100 🥇
9. Accidentally set the unsupported mixed gender FKT on the Swan Song with @lance_theathlete 👑

Writing it all down just blows my mind. To see where I am now and look back on where I was just two short years ago is nothing short of astounding. A huge, HUUUGGEE thank you to @gsenduranceproject and @amberdferreira . For the past two years she has coached me through success, failure, injury, and the most hectic scheduling needs ever. As I wrap up two months of downtime, I’m looking forward to starting my training for next year. I can’t wait to see what comes next!!
