Been a privilege to work with @derek.combs0926 and his son Asher. Asher is the definition of a hard-worker, excited to see him to continue to grow and have great freshman season this year at South Putnam! We have put heavy emphasis on footwork and getting to his spots.

4 athletes.
Same task: 3-step 45° cut.
4 different movement solutions.

Some athletes steer momentum.
Some athletes brake and push.
Some athletes plant way outside their frame.
Some athletes use more whole-foot contact.
Some athletes bias the inside edge of the foot.

None are automatically right or wrong.

But every strategy has a cost.

A wider plant may create higher braking forces… is the athlete equipped to handle them?

A smoother redirect may preserve momentum better… but does it create the separation you need? Or are they avoiding forceful ground contacts?

A more aggressive strategy may help sharper cuts… but how do the joint angles look? Or is a lack of control disguised as aggression?

A simple 45° cut can give you clues into:

- how the athlete redirects force
- how much speed they preserve
- how they organize the trunk, pelvis, and foot
- how much braking they rely on
- how efficiently they reaccelerate

Why does this matter for coaches?

Because the cut strategy might tell you what the athlete relies on, or lacks.

And once you understand that, your programming becomes more targeted.

The goal isn’t making everybody move the same. Or to have ONE “right” way to move.

The goal is helping athletes find the most efficient solution their body can repeatedly own under speed, fatigue and chaos. 💎
