HAPPY PUB DAY!

Never Can Say Goodbye is officially out in the world today, and I’m sitting in a deep mix of joy, gratitude, pride, shot nerves, and awe. This book was carried into being by so many hands, hearts, and conversations.

An agent (@lanewriteswords), an Editor, a publisher (@harperonebooks), friends, family, ancestors, teachers, doulas, caregivers, and every person who trusted me with their stories and their love. Thank you for believing in this work, and in me, even on the days I was still trying to believe myself and this book.

And to everyone who will read it, thank you in advance for making space for these stories, for grief, for memory, for tenderness, for the hard and holy parts of loving people all the way through. I hope this book meets you exactly where you are and reminds you that you don’t have to do any of this alone.

Today, we celebrate. Today, we release. Today, I love you all to DEATH.

I Wrote a Book! The Cover is Here!

It feels right that I’m dropping the cover of my book, Never Can Say Goodbye: The Life of a Death Doula and the Art of a Peaceful End, on Halloween. It’s a day when we’re asked to sit a little closer to death, to remember those who’ve gone before us, and to honor the space between the living and the dead.

This book has lived inside me for years. Decades! It’s made up of stories from the bedsides I’ve sat beside, the hands I’ve held, and the silences I’ve shared with people taking their final breaths. But it’s also about the living. About us! The ones still figuring out how to talk about death, how to grieve, how to die with fewer regrets, how to heal.

Never Can Say Goodbye looks at the reasons why death is such a quiet subject in so many homes. We’ve inherited a silence born from generations of trauma, from medical racism, from loss that never got the chance to be named. Through this book, I wanted to break that silence. I wanted to show that peace, healing, and even joy can exist in the same space as dying.

This book is for anyone who’s lost someone and didn’t know what to do with the ache. It’s for those walking loved ones home. It’s for the ones who want to learn how to hold space, how to listen, and how to let go.

I promise it’s for you.

For fans of Sabaa Tahir and Guillermo del Toro comes The Lustrous Dark, a sweeping YA fantasy inspired by a Moroccan folktale, in which a young midwife’s apprentice rises up to take back the power that’s been stolen from women.

Orphaned as a baby, Shay has spent her life training as the midwife’s apprentice. Her role grants her stability, yet Shay has always yearned for more. Namely, motherly affection and answers regarding her mysterious birth—neither of which the midwife deems practical to provide.

After Shay discovers her birth mother, Hind, is still alive and addicted to a magical drug called Snow, she determines to get the woman clean. But when Hind betrays Shay to get her hands on more Snow, Shay’s abandoned within a deadly forest and forced to rely on a band of monstrous ghouls for safety.

Shay’s realm has long stood on the brink of war between the men who control magic and the revolutionaries who want to eliminate it. But in the forest, Shay hears the pleading call of ancient spirits who claim that not only has magic been stolen, but Shay has the power to return it. With the help of a spitfire revolutionary and the boy who’s winning over her heart, Shay discovers the horrific truth of who produces Snow and will have to decide for herself whether to heed the spirits’ charge or fade into obscurity.

I slept on a lot of couches. Got fed by folks who didn’t owe me a thing. Got hugs from strangers and lovers and their mamas who saw something in me I was still trying to see in myself.

This book only exists because people poured into me. Held me down when I was tired. Held me up when I talked about quitting.

So finishing was a thank you to everyone who ever supported me, even in ways you didn’t know you were.

This book exists because of you.

And if you’re reading this, holding onto a story, an idea, a thing only you can make, let this be your sign: if you don’t create it, it will never, ever exist.

Nobody else can birth what’s meant to come through you.
