A little throwback to some of the AMAZING women I got to sit down with at last year’s Women in Music Awards 🖤

I was PROPER fangirling when @skin_skunkanansie from @officialskunkanansie sat in my chair

Fun fact… I was a bit of a rock/soul artist back in the day, hence the lip ring 🖤

I basically wanted to be a cross between Alanis Morissette and Mary J. Blige. Then I saw Skin. Bald head. Black woman. ROCKING OUT. Completely in her own lane.

And I was like… OH MY GOSH 😍

So getting to sit down with her all these years later and finding out during our conversation that she’s Jamaican too, was a real full-circle moment for me.

And that’s what I love about Mentor Me Conversations. You get to hear the stories behind the women you’ve watched, admired and been inspired by.

We’re back at the Music Week Women in @musicweekinsta this week and I can’t wait to see who’s sitting in the chair this year !

Some of our students had the opportunity to attend the Mental Health & Songwriting Summit, presented by Spotify’s Heart & Soul in partnership with Music Minds Matter. 💚

It was an inspiring day with talented writers Jin Jin, Gabe Simon, Ruth Anne Cunningham, Satch & Louis Du Sauzay having honest conversations about mental health, creativity and protecting yourself in the music industry — from imposter syndrome and anxiety, to creating safe writing rooms built on trust, mutual respect and vulnerability.

Denise Devenish discussed self love and care and highlighted the importance of being able to write about adversity but not letting it consume.

“Speak to your suffering, but don’t be consumed by your suffering.”

Guvna B and Kojey Radical also spoke powerfully about burnout, staying grounded, setting boundaries and surrounding yourself with people you trust enough to be vulnerable with.

Perhaps the most important takeaway of all: we’re in this together. We’re not alone. ❤️
