Te amo, Chicago!

HUGE thank you to everyone who made this trip an incredible experience and delight.

Thank you to the @camochicago staff, especially Leo, Riley, and Caroline, who invited me to be a part of A Plot of One’s Own 一亩三分地, hosted my artist’s talk, and beautifully installed this exhibition. Thank you to @jasondunda for your hospitality and hosting me at the iconic Polka Hall.

Thank you to all the friends–from Chicago and those who traveled from as far as Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin–to attend my talk (and to see me while I was within a reasonable-ish driving distance), @therealscript, @davidnajibkasir, @mallory.shotwell, @type_rounds_1968, and more than I can name. I am so grateful for all of you.

Other trip highlights and side quests: I finally got to visit @lmrm_chicago, a gem for the weaving and textile community. Hope Wang, so great to finally meet in-person, thank you for sharing your vision-made-real with me. @lardamang, thanks for inviting me to crash your SAIC class field trip to experience @_yangmai_’s exhibition at Nick Cave’s Facility. @eliotwhitehill @kwulasultun, you’ve always been a great storyteller, and it was so special to hear your voice telling a story about Salish Wooly Dogs in the Native Truths exhibition at @fieldmuseum, and to share this experience alongside strangers, kids, and fellow artist and friend @mcmikal The meeting of worlds across geographies is one of the big reasons that I love working in the arts.

For those visiting Chicago within the upcoming year, I highly recommend that you visit CAMOC, where you can see this stellar lineup: Andy Chan, Yi Cynthia Chen, Mel Chin, Xingyu Huang, Mari Miller, Hương Ngô, Stephanie H. Shih, Connie Zheng, and me! This exhibition reflects on the unique ways Chinese Americans have used and shared domestic yard space to grow food and stay connected to heritage, and relationships between gardening, food sovereignty, orientalism, and American identity.

I’m going to be thinking about this trip for a while. Thanks for the warmth and inspiration.

So excited to close our first season of Tiger Balm with the conversation between Larry Lee @lardamang and Guanyu Xu @xuguanyu . They talk about working together through the Chinese American Museum of Chicago, getting to know each other when Guanyu was an undergrad at SAIC, and their most recent activities and travels.

He is also adjunct faculty at Columbia College Chicago and DePaul University.

徐冠宇 Guanyu Xu (b.1993 Beijing) is an artist currently based in Chicago and Beijing. He is the recipient of the Illinois Arts Council Creative Projects Grant, Chicago DCASE Artist Grant, CENTER Development Grant, Hyéres International Festival Prize, PHOTOFAIRS Shanghai Exposure Award, Philadelphia Photo Arts Center Annual Competition, and Kodak Film Photo Award. Can’t thank you enough to the Greg Bae Memorial fund and @don.bosco.bae for kicking off this project, to 3Arts Chicago and all of our project supporters for helping us continue, and to Berkley Young, who interned over the summer and contributed research towards future episodes. A huge thank you to everyone who came out to our 25th Benefit Dinner! It was such a fun night and so energizing to gather with CAMOC’s longstanding community of supporters along with the many new faces.

We’re happy to announce that we were able to meet and exceed our $60K fundraising goal, and that is due to the generosity of all of you! Thank you for being the backbone of the work we do, for the trust, commitment, and the joy.

Thank you to @yuliondance_chicago and @yinhedc for showing out as always, @uniuni_us delicious tea station, and @brutalist.brewing for the weirdly popular Pickle Beer.

An extra big thank you in particular to our incredible gala committee for the amazing hard work, this year’s Gold event sponsor ‌Chinatown Parking Corp, DJs Jay & Anne (strongest knees in the game), and our very handsome emcees, @lardamang & @jasondunda

We are so deeply grateful and hope to see you all next year.

Cheers🥂🎉

I hopped around to several art events the first weekend of March, all centering immigrant and Asian American voices. I could not ask for a warmer welcome back to the windy city of Chicago.
Being back in the Chicago art spaces and witnessing the work of so many diverse identities gives me strength to keep making art and telling my story.

The blog post is up on my website and is linked in my bio!

Thanks to everyone who came out to last night’s book celebration @hai_bayo for our cookbook “Word of Mouth Asian American Artists Sharing Recipes.”

We featured artist talks by our book contributors @iamkiam and @lardamang and @javebrave and I talked about the cookbook. It was a standing room only crowd and we sold out all the books we brought to the event.

A big thanks to Hac Tran from Haibayo for hosting us, Kiam Marcelo Junio for the event graphic design, Larry Lee for making kalbi, Sunny Cho for making kimchi pancakes, and Jave Yoshimoto for driving across country from Omaha and helping me make a ton of Spam musubi for the event.
