What a whirlwind! #PSJAcollege4all was amazing. We learned a lot about how to help our Early College high school grow and flourish (and we ate a lot of pizza and a LOT of chips and salsa!). Excited to be back at Irvington Prep to put it into practice. We missed you, @iparavens!

First annual Finals CramJam was a blast!

CAW students worked on final projects, shared snacks, wrote affirmations, made buttons, decorated clipboards, petted celebrity dog Spud Cudahy, Just Dance-d, and weighed in on some new policies in development.

Today was not my graduation. Which feels odd because I attended Irvington for 12 years of my life and I always assumed this is where I would be today, and I was there, just in the audience. I jumped all of these fine people for a photo today and I'm glad I did. Some of these people I met in kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd grade, others my Jr. year, but they'll always be a part of me and I can't believe they graduated today. Even though I switched my senior year I will always be a Raven!

Happy Birthday Ms. Desmond.
While I was visiting in Canada, I had the good fortune to see this ten dollar note. It made me catch my breath in awe. Here was bill displaying a strikingly beautiful woman, a woman of colour. I was so surprised. I mean Canucks have been pretty creative with their currency in the past, besides the standard Queen and dead Prime Ministers, there has been a hockey game, our hero Terry Fox, the one legged runner for Cancer awareness, a beaver, a loon, polar bears, and even mounted police. But finally, here was evidence that Canadians or at least the government of Canada was ready to acknowledge it’s own dark history of racism.
So here’s a little background history about Viola Desmond. She was a contemporary of Rosa Parks and could easily be compared to her American counterpart . She took an ant- segregation stand in her native Nova Scotia by sitting in the “whites only” section of a theatre. And this all happened in 1946. Ten years before Rosa’s famous refusal to give up her seat to a white man on a bus. You need to consider something here. Canadian racism is not so entrenched as it is the States. It’s more an unwritten code. Viola for her act of blurring those lines by sitting where she wanted to sit, was subjected to degradation, humiliation, and bodily harm as she was dragged out of the theatre.She was then arrested, fined and jailed overnight. She endured a lengthy protracted court battle that did not conclude in her favor. Her marriage fell apart, she sold the very successful Beauty School (for blacks) that she had started and moved away to Montreal. She died at the age of 51 of intestinal issues.
Still what we need to consider here is what her singular stand against segregation did. It fueled a whole new generation of Canadian people of color to embrace her spirit of activism and social consciousness.
The choice of Desmond’s image to be printed on the Canadian currency came in 2018. Her legacy is now solidified: a woman of colour who was a successful entrepreneur, community leader and the face of social activism.
