"Ed Gibson Was Larry Hagman's Real Hustle – Before Jeannie and J.R. Stole the Spotlight." 🫧👮‍♂️🚔🫧

Look, most folks remember Larry Hagman as the astronaut getting wish-granted by bottle-blonde Barbara Eden or that deliciously evil oil baron J.R. Ewing who made Texas seem even slimier than it already is. But before all that glossy primetime chaos, Hagman was quietly slinging drama in the trenches of daytime soap opera gold: The Edge of Night.

As Ed Gibson, he showed up in the early '60s and spent a couple of years neck-deep in the show's signature stew of crime, romance, and small-town community backstabbing. You know the drill—courtroom showdowns, steamy affairs that threatened to blow up the whole neighborhood, and enough moral gray areas to make a nun question her life choices. It was pure soap opera catnip, and Hagman nailed it with that easy charm and sharp timing that would later make him a household name.

This wasn't some throwaway gig, either. It was the perfect launching pad for a guy who could do earnest lawyer one minute and sly operator the next. Pop art piece or not, slapping Hagman as Ed Gibson on canvas feels correct—bold colors, dramatic shadows, the kind of vibe that screams "I was here before the fame machine turned me into an icon." Because while Jeannie and Dallas made him a legend, Ed Gibson proved Larry had the chops to hold his own in the messy, addictive world of daytime drama long before the big bucks and bigger hair.

Respect to the man who could go from Edge-of-Night intrigue to "Yes, Master" without missing a beat. The soaps built him; the rest of us just got to enjoy the fireworks.

Next soap destination: NBC
