When I first moved to this city, I had a coworker who insisted I had to hit up NCE. He knew Chinese food, to say the least—he’d spent a couple summers in China helping out at an orphanage (badass, by the way). Finally, we found a time and put a date on it. To say it met the mark would be an understatement. Not only was it the best Chinese food I’ve ever had, but the vibe made you feel like you were teleported to a side street in Shanghai. Oh, and it’s BYOB, adding to the lore.

You’ll find yourself striking up conversations with random families as everyone waits below the Italian ophthalmologist’s office, hoping for their turn to get into the basement serving Chinese staples. As you walk in, the hole-in-the-wall spot has a TV playing some sort of travel show from an Asian channel you’ve never heard of. The condiments give you the first sign you’re in for something good—each table is loaded with the holy trinity of soy sauce, vinegar, and their homemade chili oil.

The night these photos were taken was the kind of staple night we’ve come to expect at this place. It was our friend Laramie’s birthday, and jokes were flowing to say the least. A case of Modelo later, with stomachs so full it hurt to laugh, we cashed out and headed home.

What we ate (and was poorly pictured)
• Pork steamed buns
• Pork and cabbage dumplings
• Spicy Chongqing chicken
• Spicy beef and celery
• Kung pao chicken
• Eggplant in “the best sauce”
• Sweet and sour pork
• White rice (lots of it)
