The weather brought record attendance for our final performance of King Lear in Syracuse at Thornden Park Amphitheater. From the 1st rehearsal to the final show, I had a blast directing. Thanks to my ever-stalwart crew, creative team and a great collaborative cast! Miss you all already! #shakespeare #kinglear #theatredirector #syracuse

As Lear, Bruce Paulson, himself a mountain of a man in this mountain of a play, speaks Shakespeare’s language with bell-clear authority. There’s nothing sour about his Lear. The old man is almost jolly and merely foolish in his requirement of devotion. Paulson attacks the mad scenes energetically, as the deposed monarch disintegrates into despair, finally raving and capering about in his nightshirt before his inevitable tragic end.

SSITP staple Aaron Alexander does detailed and moving work as Edgar, the disinherited son disguised as the mad beggar Tom o’Bedlam.

As his evil brother Edmund, Julia Jaremko is icy and dashing, reveling in the character’s suave villainy.

The three daughters are clearly set out. Heather Roach Czarny and Nova Starling are properly Disney-villainous as imperious Goneril and treacherous Regan. Asa Iam’s Cordelia is a wide-eyed picture of innocence.

Also of note are Jim Byrne as Lear’s stalwart companion Fool, and John Triana as the loyal Kent.

Director Roger Lipson has a solid approach to the material. He gives the storm on the heath that reflects the mad king’s turmoil an interesting spin with low tech but very Shakespearian special effects provided by the entire company.
