A short historical narrative film

🎞 Florida’s Strangest Stories Are Becoming Cinema 🎥 @lastdaysofkoreshan @fried.works

🎬 There are the neon nights, the roadside oddities, the forgotten towns and the characters who seem too strange to have been invented. But tucked away in Southwest Florida is a religious community, a charismatic prophet, a hollow Earth and a group of believers waiting for their leader to come back from the dead 📸

If you were following the pre-production of @lastdaysofkoreshan , you’ll know that waiting for Victoria was not only a plot device, but also a real life situation when it came to finding the right person to play the Empirial Goddess. Just about two weeks out from shooting came @anamariecalise , an incredibly talented actress. Her audition truly blew me away, and I am so glad to have finally found my dear Victoria.

A cult is nothing without their ancillary members. Seeing this gang’s chemistry on set was something so instant. None of them knew eachother before this project, but it there were moments of such familiarity between them all, both on and off camera. @iamninaherzog (Vesta), @milasumrall (Christine), @carlacarlacarlacarla__ (Ana), @outdoor_kid_ananias (Ash), and @amandakorland all supported the community while we grieved the transition of our dear Master Koresh.

WIP sneak peak this friday, Sept 18!

This interactive event will give viewers an insight into the filmmaking / research behind the story, see the location where it was primarily shot (@samplemcdougaldhouse )and provide feedback that can be incorporated into the final cut.

Here is a peek from @mike.ground.904 ‘s audition as the Great Koresh. I believe i had already wanted an overheard shot during this scene, but receiving this self tape cemented it for myself. Again, I could not believe in the physical deliverance Michael gave, the tremors, the breathing. I knew when i saw this tape, I had found my cult leader.

Truly grateful for Breakdown Services / @actorsaccess for allowing me to reach Michael for this role.

Be sure to catch the WIP screening: Sep 18, 7-10 @samplemcdougaldhouse

What is a cult without its leader? What is a film without its catalyst? Cyrus Teed’s death and prophecies work to set @lastdaysofkoreshan into motion. It was nothing short of a small miracle that the wonderful Michael R. Spinks (@mike.ground.904 ) gave such a powerful audition for the character of Cyrus Teed (Koresh). While I’m sure plenty of actors would be willing to play a charismatic cult leader, not many were willing to for a role where they die so early on, but Michael was a trooper and came all the way down from Georgia to do so!

Can we get a “Praise Koresh” in the comments for Michael?!

Since releasing the teaser for “Last Days of Koreshan,
” I want to introduce myself a little bit! Hi, I
am L.Fried, the writer/director/producer of the short film that is inspired by a true Florida Story.
This is my second timing directing a narrative film, my first being “I Know How You Like Your
Coffee”
. I have produced/directed many non-fiction pieces, as well as a couple of music videos
and experimental shorts (“Granny’s Living Room” and “Warmth”). Other roles I tend to take on in
production are within the art department (production design and set dressing) or post-production
(editing, marketing, etc).
Last Days is my first foray into creating a film based on a historical moment and it has been
such an incredibly fun journey. Taking on a project at this scale was also something I thought
was completely out of my wheelhouse, but it’s been such a rewarding and challenging process
every step of the way. I really cannot describe the high that followed the production days, and as
I fine tune the edit—I am really excited to share a Work-in-Progress screening this fall.
What began as a visual of a dead cult leader surrounded by his followers days after he passed
away, gave way to curiosity whethe#r there were disillusions, doubts, or those who remained
unwaveringly faithful. Last Days of Koreshan is meant to poke and prod at belief systems that
leave no room for doubt or questioning. To fit the motif, the screening will give you an
opportunity to voice your thoughts and feedback on the unfinished film, and feature a discussion
between myself and Lyn Millner, the author of “The Allure of Immortality: An American Cult, a
Florida Swamp, and a Renegade Prophet,
” THE historical book on Cyrus Teed and the
Koreshan Unity. Her book truly provided a backbone to my research on the Florida Cult. I hope
to see you all at the WIP Screening September 18 at the Sample McDougald House (where
principle filming took place)!

It’s been a wild year

I had the opportunity to direct and design more than I ever have. Half the time, I was throwing pasta at the wall and seeing what stuck. I’m grateful for the people and companies that took a chance on me!

Gigging while also doing my PhD and teaching at two universities was A LOT, but I’m grateful for every opportunity that came my way and every collaboration. Let’s do it again 💪🏻
