Am I anti-English books? Absolutely not. 😂📚

But I AM a big believer in prioritizing books written in Spanish when we’re raising bilingual kids.

Here’s why: When we sight translate (read an English book and translate it into Spanish on the spot), we’re limited by our own vocabulary and fluency. And sometimes, without even realizing it, we’re simplifying the language our kids are exposed to.

I want my kids learning words I don’t use in everyday conversation. I want them exposed to rich vocabulary and creative storytelling, and all the beautiful ways the Spanish language can be used.

And that’s why having actual Spanish books in our home matters so much to me. ❤️

Does that mean we can’t sight translate sometimes? Of course not! But I don’t want it to be our primary strategy.

If you’ve ever had to translate for a family member, you’ll probably relate to este 𝓁𝒾𝒷𝓇𝑜!

When Tío Ricky comes to visit, his nephew finds himself translating everywhere they go. And he’s not exactly happy about it! But when an unexpected medical emergency arises, he doesn’t hesitate to help because, at the end of the day, that’s what 𝒻𝒶𝓂𝒾𝓁𝒾𝒶𝓈 do.

A sweet reminder that being bilingual is such a wonderful skill to have, even when it feels like 𝓉𝓇𝒶𝒷𝒶𝒿𝑜!

And this week marks 𝑒𝓈𝓉𝑒 𝓁𝒾𝒷𝓇𝑜’s FIRST birthday! Y @latinaboomermom is working hard to get 𝑒𝓈𝓉𝑒 𝓁𝒾𝒷𝓇𝑜 on the NYT Children’s Best Sellers list, so what better time to show 𝑒𝓈𝓉𝑒 𝒸𝓊𝑒𝓃𝓉𝑜 some love?

Stories are such a beautiful way to bring language and culture to life. 📚

Inside Llamitas Level 1, each of our 12 thematic units includes a special Guest Author Read Aloud. You can find each Guest Author Read Aloud inside the Additional Resources tab for the corresponding unit.

And this Hispanic Heritage Month, we wanted to take a moment to celebrate someone very special to us our friend @latinaboomermom

Mari is a Puerto Rican author, speaker, and bilingual parenting mentor who has spent years encouraging families to nurture not only Spanish, but also the culture, identity, and connection that come with it.

Her newest book, Tío Ricky no habla inglés, feels like such a meaningful extension of that work — a story about family, language, belonging, and the experiences so many bilingual families can recognize in their own lives.

While this title isn’t part of our Level 1 Guest Author Read Alouds, we’re so happy to celebrate Mari, cheer on her newest book, and share the beautiful work she continues to do for bilingual families. ✨

Because the stories our children read matter — and so do the voices behind them.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, let’s keep reading, listening, and sharing their stories.

****UPDATE: Lotería Nights is postponed****

Just realized we haven’t posted our October calendar! The first week of October got away from us 🫠

This month, we’re out in the community and excited to bring our Casita books to several schools. We're beyond grateful for every invite 🫶🏽. It means schools, teachers, and communities believe in our little Casita and want to make sure their students and children feel seen in the books they read! Thank you for community and thank you for the support!

🌎📚 Happy International Translation Day! 📚🌎

Today is International Translation Day, a day that recognizes the important work of translators and celebrates the way translation helps people connect across languages, cultures, and communities.

As a lover of diverse books, I especially love the opportunity to highlight bilingual picture books! 💕📖 Bilingual books allow children to experience stories in more than one language, celebrate the languages spoken in their homes, and see their cultures and identities reflected on the page.

Whether you’re raising a bilingual child, learning a new language, or simply looking to add more diverse books to your bookshelf, here are some bilingual picture books to check out.

💬 Do you have a favorite bilingual picture book? Drop it in the comments so we can add more to our bookshelves!

Because every child deserves access to stories that help them see themselves, learn about others, and celebrate the beauty of language. 🌎❤️📚
