In Mónica Ojeda ‘s books earth is never a refuge or a source of stability, but rather a surface that opens up.

In Mandíbula and Nefando the territory carries a religious and bodily charge almost violent; in Las voladoras and Chamanes eléctricos en la fiesta del sol, the Andean landscape —the paramo, the volcano— is a territory stripped of idealisation, with its own internal earthquakes, yet simultaneously affected by its relationship with human beings and their way of being.

This conversation with Lala Toutonian will explore the tension between the aerial and the corporeal and what it means to be ‘down to earth’ for an Ecuadorian writer based in Spain, how her narrative fuses territory with the female body and whether flying—a recurring theme in her work—, is paradoxically the most honest way to remain grounded in the tangible weight of the violence and religion imposed upon her by the land.
