Engine testing just reached a new level of precision. Ursa Major is currently running frequency sweeps on the E-2 engine's Thrust Vector Control (TVC) system, pushing the mechanical limits to ensure stability during flight.The Technical Breakdown:Movement: Testing is reaching a maximum gimbal angle of ±7 degrees.Smart R&D: Using hardware from a previous engine revision to validate current TVC algorithms and response times.What’s Next: After these component-level tests wrap up, this actuator setup moves to the test site for the E-2’s very first gimballed test fire.

Launcher Inc., the startup that tested its 3D-printed rocket engines at EPCAL, was acquired by California-based space station developer Vast in a deal that expands both companies’ ambitions in the commercial space sector.

Founded in 2017, Launcher focused on developing cost-efficient rockets and orbital transfer vehicles designed to deploy small satellites into space. During its early years, the company conducted engine testing in containerized units at EPCAL, continuing the long legacy of aerospace activity in Calverton, once home to Grumman’s aircraft manufacturing operations. The use of 3D printing to produce liquid-fuel rocket engine components was central to Launcher’s strategy, aiming to reduce manufacturing costs while improving cooling efficiency.

The acquisition brings Launcher’s technology and team under the Vast umbrella, a company working toward the development of a next-generation commercial space station. Vast’s long-term plans include building a station featuring artificial gravity, signaling a bold new phase in private-sector space exploration. Leadership from Launcher transitioned into key roles within the combined company, ensuring continuity of technical expertise.

Prior to the acquisition, Launcher made headlines for launching an orbital transfer vehicle aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. While the mission faced technical setbacks, it represented an important milestone in the company’s efforts to provide satellite deployment services in an increasingly competitive industry.

Though Launcher ultimately relocated to California, its time at EPCAL underscores Long Island’s ongoing relevance in advanced manufacturing and aerospace testing. From its historic aviation heritage to modern space startups, the region continues to serve as a proving ground for ambitious technological ventures that reach far beyond its shores.

Orbiter life and death

I had the honor of painting this commission for @3digitalcooks! The @launcherspace Orbiter satellite (SN1 and SN3 merged)

over the long days and long nights of 2022 and 2023, I worked alongside a group of talented and wonderful engineers, technicians, machinists, and staff that made the Orbiter SN1 and SN3 Satellites into a reality.

Although Orbiter's lives were not long lived, the friendships, memories, and lessons all live on.

El 15 de septiembre de 2025, Launcher completó con éxito la sexta prueba de fuego (test fire) de su nuevo motor E-2, operando durante 202 segundos en ciclo de misión completa, ¡y sin ningún problema de hardware! Su ritmo de fabricación y pruebas está acelerando a toda marcha.

🔍 ¿Quién es Launcher y por qué esto importa?

Launcher es una empresa aeroespacial estadounidense fundada en 2017 por Max Haot. Su sede está en Hawthorne, California, y desde febrero de 2023 forma parte del grupo Vast.

Se especializa en desarrollar motores líquidos de alto rendimiento. El E-2 es un motor LOX/RP-1 en ciclo de combustión enriquecido, diseñado para cohetes pequeños, pero con eficiencia de primer nivel.

Un logro notable: Launcher fabricó la cámara de combustión más grande del mundo impresa en una sola pieza mediante impresión 3D (metal de cobre), lo que simplifica fabricación, reduce peso, mejora el enfriamiento regenerativo y permite iteraciones de diseño más rápidas.
