Rust Belt People! Hope to see you at our events this fall. #AlltheWomenIKnow

I first heard “Armagh” by the Au Pairs in the 80s around the time I learned about the pervasiveness of GBV. The song extends our memory of the IRA women prisoners staging a “no work” protest that evolved into a “dirty protest.” Prison guards were squeamish and offended when prisoners told them about their need for period supplies, but okay with violently strip-searching and sexually assaulting them. The visual I have for this song is menstrual blood smeared on the cell walls and poop plugging up peep holes. Armagh, the only women’s prison in Northern Ireland, closed in 1986. See also “Off Duty Trip,” a song mocking the legal system’s inclination to protect violent men and preserve male power.

from the Notes:
The text beginning “No woman I know got ready with her sisters” is a response to the first eleven testimonies in the 2021 lawsuit against Eastern Michigan University over its handling of sexual assault cases.

All the Women I Know acknowledges that gender-based violence is a global epidemic infecting systems and states, as well as intimate spaces. Everyone bears some of the pain related to sexual violence because everyone, whether they know it or not, cares about someone who has been the victim of it. Anyone can be a survivor, but the problem continues to be overwhelmingly one of men’s violence against women and girls. The dangers are even more elevated for trans women and other gender minorities as well as for women subject to racism. Our gratitude goes out to survivor advocates and activists who work to amplify the problem, make it visible, and help us imagine a world without it.

All the Women I Know is driven by a raging heartbeat that clears a feminist path through the social harms and betrayals we survive every day as women. The book’s creativity with language and imagery affirms, with boundless trust, our individual and collective abilities to change this treacherous world.

For the revolution.

All the Women I Know combines the power of photography and anaphoric incantation to offer a testimony of what it is like to be a woman in our current era. This work documents how women hold themselves, each other, their fears, what they’ve witnessed, survived—pass on, and endure. There’s tremendous power in the anonymity of the “No woman”—she is every, any woman—each lyric is fact, secret, regret, the thing that happens all the time that should never happen and don’t we wish it didn’t happen. “No woman I know has already said it. They are saying it now.” I needed this book; I found myself in it; this book is for every woman you know, and the people who love them.
—Diana Khoi Nguyen

Photographer and author, Laura Larson has an interesting relationship with her one of her chosen mediums. She looks to photography’s history as a documentary practice but sees her own work as a product of skepticism. Her recent work includes capturing images with a large format camera. The Broad & High team met up with her out in the field and in the darkroom to capture her process.

See our feature on @laura_larson_studio on the Broad & High YouTube channel through the link in our bio Photographer Laura Larson an old-fashioned large format camera outdoors, draped in a dark cloth. The camera is mounted on a tripod. The background is a natural outdoor setting.

I recently wrapped up a project with @emmakindall that compiled audio and visual images from artist/caregivers teaching in Ohio. The project is called “Status Update: Field Notes from Ohio Artist Caregivers”, shared at @midamericacollegeartassoc this past month. In order pictured are screenshots from contributors:

Sheilah Restack
Doo-Sung Yoo
Dani Restack
Suzanne Silver
Nicholas Warndorf
Katie Davis
Laura Larson
Jeff Hazeldon

If you’d like to see the video in full, reach out and we will send it to you. You can read a full description of the project below:

Status Update: Field Notes from Ohio Artist Caregivers

This presentation shares the lived experiences of artist-parents working in higher education, focusing on art faculty in Central Ohio through a compilation of audio narratives. Pairing audio recordings with selected images, participants share how they negotiate the intersecting dimensions of parenthood, teaching, and creative practice. Voices represent parents with young children, parents with elementary/high school children, and parents with adult children. The resulting compilation charts the nuanced realities of parenting within academia, highlighting institutional challenges, shifting priorities, clarifying moments, evolving understandings of work-life balance, and experiences of community.

Also thank you to @msliztolson for chairing the session this presentation was a part of, “Teaching in the Shadows” and giving this work space to be out in the world.
