If you’ve ever had that little voice whispering “you should write a book,” this one’s for you. The Gateless Fall Festival kicks off TODAY. It’s a free online literary event, one hour a day, all week, with some seriously acclaimed writers sharing how they actually did it: finding their voice, finishing the book, landing the agent, and building a creative life that pays. Here’s the lineup: Sun 10/18: The Courage to Tell Your Story and Create a Living as a Writer, with Suzanne Kingsbury and Maryam Mehrtash (@suzannekingsbury , @maryammehrtash ) Mon 10/19: A Clear Map to the Book You Really Want to Write, with Terri Trespicio and Laura Belgray (@ttrespicio , @laurabelgray ) Tue 10/20: How to Pivot Your Career, Ignore the Hecklers and Create Writing that Changes the World, with Deepa Purushothaman and Denise Soler Cox (@deepa.puru , @denisesolercox ) Wed 10/21: Busting Through the Critic to Write the Bestselling Memoir, with Tamara Saviano and Mary Gauthier (@tsaviano , @marygauthier ) Thu 10/22: On Turning Truth into Fiction and Making It Big as a Debut Author, with Kelly Anderson and Daisy Florin (@doctorkellyanderson , @daisyflorin ) Fri 10/23: How to Find Your Voice and Get Paid for Doing What You Love, with Minton Sparks and... me! (@mintonsparks , @meghansylvester ) Sunday through Thursday sessions are at 4pm Eastern (2pm Mountain). Mine is Friday at noon Eastern (10am Mountain), and I get to close out the whole week alongside the powerhouse that is Minton Sparks. I’m so excited I can barely sit still. If you’re seeing this after the event has started, register anyway! Even if you can’t make it live, register anyway!! Everything is recorded, so sign up even if you can’t make it live and the replays land right in your inbox. No strings attached, nothing to lose. Just a week of really good writing medicine. Grab your free spot at the link in my bio! Hope to see you in there! xo, Meg

I’ve talked about writing a book for years. My husband has heard it. My closest friends have heard it. It’s been one of those dreams that has quietly followed me for a really long time. So I flew across the country to sit in a room with some of the top publishers, editors, agents and authors in the world and finally start. And the whole time I kept thinking about little Angelina. The girl who barely graduated high school and went to beauty school with absolutely no idea how far this industry could take her. If this book helps one little Gina just starting beauty school… or one woman who’s been behind the chair for 20 years and is exhausted, burnt out and wondering if this is all there is… I want her to know: You are worth more than you think you are. Your skills can change your life. Your story matters. And a little bit of audacity can take you REALLY freaking far. 😂 I don’t know exactly where this book is going to take me yet. But I finally started. 🤍 And sometimes that’s the whole damn thing.

Okay guys, giving some flowers to Steve Krug, @therealjoannawiebe , @laurabelgray , Luke Wroblewski and @google 🌸👇🏼 The reason my clients get more enquiries from their websites is because of what I learned from you 😍 Here’s what I stole (sorry, not sorry) 👇🏼🤭 ✨ Test it with real people from Steve Krug: What confuses visitors before a site goes live
✨ Use your customers’ words from Joanna Wiebe: Write homepage headlines that sound like the people reading them
✨ Write like you talk from Laura Belgray: Make About pages sound like a real person, not a brochure
✨ Test it on your phone first from Luke Wroblewski: Make sure every site works for visitors on their phones
✨ Keep it fast from Google: Cut the slow pages that lose visitors before they see the offer Want the full list of what your website needs to convert? Comment CHECKLIST and I’ll DM you my free Converting Website Checklist 💅🏼 If you’re new here, hi, I’m Anita and I’m a web designer who builds websites for small business owners that actually bring in enquiries ✨ Follow for website tips that make your site work harder 💖

What makes your brand memorable? Sometimes, it's simply sounding like yourself. ✨ Laura Belgray built Talking Shrimp around personality, storytelling, and a voice that doesn't try to sound like everyone else. Her journey is a reminder for women entrepreneurs: You don't need a louder brand. You need a more authentic one. 🌸 Let your personality be part of what people remember. #Womopreneur #WomenEntrepreneurs #PersonalBranding

When I think of my favorite professional accomplishment or experience this year, two things come to mind: being named a finalist for the Chautauqua Janus Prize, and the live Shrimp Club retreat which included a ticket to Bingeable! Live, Laura’s writing retreat in New York City. Both experiences helped me define myself as “a real writer.” And I made some new friends who are just the most amazing, smartest, talentest people. And somewhere along the way, I realized I don’t actually want to spend my time trying to build a personal brand around marketing. I like marketing. I’m good at it. I love helping my clients figure out what they want to say, finding the words for it, and helping them put those words out into the world. But I don’t particularly like promoting myself promoting other people. 😂 Which probably explains why this account has mostly become a graveyard of marketing posts I write whenever I suddenly feel like I should be posting something. So, I’m done doing that. I’ve decided to go all in on two things: Making room for the writer I already am and building a body of work I’m proud of. And working with a small number of clients whose work I believe in—using my writing to help support their dreams while that work helps support mine. From here on out, this account is going to look a little different. I’m going to use it to share original work. Essays. Poems. Stories. Things I’m thinking about. Things I’m working on. Maybe things that don’t fit neatly into a content strategy at all. I’m not entirely sure what it will become yet, but I sure hope you’ll join me for the journey. Ps the incredibly talented @laurabelgray has a few open seats for Shrimp Club, where you can sharpen your writing, find more of your own voice, and spend eight months surrounded by ridiculously smart people who care about making good things. I loved my experience in it. If that sounds like something you need, go take a look.
