This was one of the species that I had the pleasure and opportunity to raise this year. My discovery of this species was a big surprise. I was looking for caterpillars of the largest moth species in Europe, the “Saturnia pyri,” commonly known as the “ Great Peacock Moth.” The idea was to catch some caterpillars of the species I was looking for, to raise them and later release them into the wild, but I ended up finding this species instead of the one I was looking for. I found this one on the trunk of its host tree, a weeping willow. As you can see, it was already in its final stage and looking for a safe place to make its cocoon, so when I took this one home, I prepared the box with a suitable habitat and she ended up making her cocoon, on a piece of palm tree wood I had in my yard. This species has a wingspan of 34 to 45mm and they can be found in Europe, Africa and Asia.

This is the lighthouse located on the Berlengas island, known as Berlenga Island Lighthouse or Duque de Bragança Lighthouse. It is a Portuguese lighthouse located at the highest point of Berlenga Grande, in the Berlengas archipelago, in the municipality of Peniche, district of Leiria. In this lighthouse, between 1897 and 1985, one of the two hyper-radiant Fresnel lenses that equipped Portuguese lighthouses was installed, but is now on display at the Lighthouse Directorate Museum Centre in Paço de Arcos. The second is still installed and operating at the Cabo de São Vicente Lighthouse in the Algarve. The lighthouse is currently powered by photovoltaic panels. The lighthouse structure is 29 metres high and was built in 1842. 📷🌍💡🇵🇹

This is one of the areas inside the Fort of São João Baptista das Berlengas, or simply known as the Fort of the Berlengas. It has a small bar where they serve drinks and food, such as salads, hamburgers, hotdogs and other types of food. The fort is located on the largest island of the archipelago of the Berlengas, in the municipality of Peniche. king Manuel of Portugal, ordered the construction of a fortress in 1502, which was immediately rectified under the reign of King Sebastian of Portugal. The fort was constructed from the remains of a pre-existing monastery (the Monastery of the Misericórdia da Berlenga), which had previously been abandoned. Hieronymite monks decided that the Berlengas were well situated to provide aid for seafearing people in need of shelter. The islands isolation also provided great conditions for the monks to live in austerity through solitude and silence, assiduous prayer and healthy penance. But, the monks became victims of frequent attacks by Algerian, Moroccan, English, and French pirates and privateers. They also had violent weather often cut-off communication to the mainland, which was especially distressing during pirate incursions, as result, the Monastery was abandoned. 📷🌍🏰🇵🇹

Another picture with a different perspective of the Fort of São João Baptista das Berlengas, or simply known as the Fort of the Berlengas. This was the first gull species that i saw in Berlengas Island, she was walking near people who were on the beach, with the idea of finding something to eat and perhaps also hoping that someone would give her food. This large species of gull, can be found in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa and their wingspan is typically between 120–155 cm. Like most gulls, they are omnivores and opportunistic foragers. They will scavenge on rubbish, as well as seeking suitable prey in fields, on the coast, or robbing food from smaller gulls and other seabirds. Although urban populations are generally opportunistic scavengers, they can shift to a predatory diet if necessary, this was observed during the lockdown of Italy in 2020, when the lack of food scraps led this species of gulls of Rome to take prey as large as rats and rock doves. This gulls usually breed in colonies and they usually lay three eggs and are defended vigorously. The nest is a sometimes sparse mound of vegetation built on the ground or on cliff ledges, but in some places, such as Gibraltar, Galicia and Portugal, they have started nesting on buildings, inside cities and even on trees. 📷🌍🇵🇹🕊️

Well, I don’t think there are enough words to describe how beautiful the colour of this water is! This place is almost like something out of a film. Once you cross this bridge, you reach the beach on Berlengas Island, called (Praia da Berlenga Grande). 📷🌎🏝️🇵🇹

After we saw a few things in Peniche, it was time for lunch and we decided to choose one of the restaurants we had on our list. The name of this restaurant is (Cantinho do Bolha) and the name of this dish is (Naco da Vazia). The food was delicious with good prices and the service was excellent. 📷🌎🇵🇹🥩
