I have collected ceramics by Laura Gibbs for some time now, as I love the effects she achieves using the saggar firing process.
In this process the porcelain is placed in a saggar container which typically contains metals and oxides, and then fired in an electric kiln. This creates smoky, metallic and earthy effects on the surface of the ceramic.
I was fortunate to receive a damaged cylinder from Laura last year, and have been experimenting with cutting and shaping pieces of the cylinder to transform into wearable pieces of jewellery. (swipe right to see the drawn cut lines on the cylinder before the cutting took place)

The first piece is this brooch - set with orange and yellow sapphires to frame the ceramic and complement its colouring.
The photo was taken whilst work was in progress, I've learnt loads from starting this, and I'm excited to see where this collaboration goes.
Thank you so much Laura!

What a year. So much learning. With the fabulous @thecraftrevolution. My throwing course with @lauren_nicholas_ceramics and apprenticeship @coombefarmstudios where I learnt so much and made some lovely new friends. Woodfiring with the @theowlacombepotters which I am completely obsessed with…….. new job, new studio, all good things. Next year lots more learning, clay and fire. (And of course trips to Cornwall) Next year I will be a bit gentler on myself as I pushed myself perhaps a bit too much at times. But the love of pots is too strong! ❤️💕

We built a Kiln! And then we fired it! First time doing this, first time using an ash glaze, so much learning with the Coombe crew, delighted to be part of it :)
