Earlier this year, as part of the Multispecies Festival, we gathered for Tree Social, an event that asked what it might mean to encounter the street trees around The New School not simply as urban infrastructure, but as neighbors, collaborators, and potential friends.

Tree Social reimagined care for street trees as an interspecies social event, beginning from the idea that good relationships start with deep listening. We are far more likely to protect what we have a genuine relationship with, so caring for urban nature may depend less on obligation and more on friendship.

Artist Laura Nova (Parsons/NaturePLACE Artist in Residence), ecological sound artist Lisa Schonberg (Parsons), and social scientist Lindsay Campbell (U.S. Forest Service) invited participants to encounter the street trees surrounding The New School through the rituals we often use to make friends: meeting, listening, getting to know one another, and building connection before committing to care.

🌱 Care as multispecies friendship
🐛 Research as relationship across species
🌀 Listening as the first act of ecological care

As we begin a new semester, we’re excited to continue sharing moments from the festival and to introduce the Multispecies Lab’s upcoming programming, research, conversations, and collaborations.

At the Flat Iron district two stops: an interactive performance with the great Aaron Landsman, which shared his brilliant card-based interactive project All the Time in the World, combining our contemporary need to accummulate and narrate the snapshots of our life but instead of making it an impersonal online way having the participant do it in a personal, luce an intimate way. From there we went to YIVO ( institute of jewish research) to see their fascinating Palmistry and Jewish magic show led by the deeply knowledgeable Rockl Kafrissen, playwright and cultural critic. Thank you Laura Nova for suggesting this stop!

What happens if you let a group of New York City design students build your Sankt Hans bonfire? 🔥

The bonfire is an essential part of the Danish midsummer celebration Sankt Hans. A week ago, when the Consulate General set the scene for the summer celebration, we had a bonfire out of the ordinary.

While open fire on a Midtown rooftop was not advised, that didn’t hold us back. Instead we found an ally in the Parsons School of Design. This semester, a group of students were working with rituals from around the world, and our Danish Sankt Hans proved to be the perfect muse.

After our colleagues Matthias Agner Rasmussen and Esther Kirkegaard Thye-Petersen presented them with the Danish rituals, the students went to work. Their resulting work was the center of attention at our Sankt Hans celebration.

Thank you to professors Otto von Busch and Laura Nova as well as the students for bringing this creative vision to life!

Tree Social — with Laura Nova, Lisa Schonberg, Lindsay K. Campbell

“Tree Social” reimagined street tree care as an interspecies social event.
Participants were guided through an encounter with street trees near The New School by artist Laura Nova (Parsons/NaturePLACE Artist in Residence), ecological sound artist Lisa Schonberg (Parsons), and social scientist Lindsay Campbell (U.S. Forest Service, Northern Research Station), in an emulation of the social rituals we use to make friends: mixing, getting to know each other, and creating connection and empathy before committing to care for one another.

A multispecies social encounter with street trees near The New School, exploring listening, care, empathy, and interspecies relation through guided ecological attention.

Congratulations to our @parsons_integrateddesign seniors on your triumphant capstone reviews!

A room shaped by attention—
students testing ideas in real time, and practitioners listening closely, asking questions that matter.

Thought made visible, refined collectively.

To move from study into the field is not a clean break.
It’s a continuation of rigor, of curiosity, of bravery, of responsibility to yourselves and to what and who may come next.

Grateful for the depth of exchange,
and for the many ways knowledge circulates across generations.

On Day 1 of our @multispecieslab Ideas Festival, a wonderful group of humans and trees came together for Tree Social: a workshop, performance and ritual of care through attention, led by @lauranova @lisaannschonberg and Lindsay Campbell. The two honey locust trees outside the @thenewschool University Center became more visible, audible, tactile to us - and we used our bodies and tools to clean, aerate and enrich their soil around their roots. These trees are our community, and we move forward acknowledging them, grateful for them when we are in their presence ✨🌱 🎧Thank you to all who attended ✨🌱🎧 photos by @ikvalet @genevievejeanne @eva_perezdevega

On the eve of the first day of the Multispecies Lab Ideas Festival, we are sharing with you the first three events of our gathering.

The conference will open in the Hirshon Suite at 55 W 13th St with a brief welcome from the conference planning team.

Immediately following we will be graced by philosopher/writer @xophcox and @moth_rights Director of Programs & lawyer Jacqueline Gallant, who will present in a session about Multispecies Ontologies and Rights, moderated by @eva_perezdevega

At noon, head down the street for the Tree Social happening / workshop — street tree care reimagined as a interspecies multisensory social event, guided by @lauranova Lindsay Campbell and @lisaannschonberg (RSVP recommended).

Our afternoon rounds off with Multispecies Listenings, engaging sound as a method for tracing ecological encounters. Sound artists @masyoungblood and @ac____dmnd and poet/writer @genevievejeanne will present talks, followed by a discussion panel with moderator @lisaannschonberg .

🎧🌱⚖️ What are the possibilities when we listen to, respect, and get to know our multispecies communities?
