My guest this week is Laura Cantrell—a Nashville-born singer, songwriter, and radio host who has spent more than 25 years making country music that draws deeply from the genre’s history while remaining distinctly her own. Her 2000 debut album, "Not the Tremblin’ Kind", famously became a favorite of legendary BBC DJ John Peel, who called it his favorite record of the previous ten years—and possibly of his life.

Laura has since released a series of acclaimed records, including "When the Roses Bloom Again", "Humming by the Flowered Vine", "No Way There from Here", and 2023’s "Just Like a Rose: The Anniversary Sessions".

Her 2011 album "Kitty Wells Dresses: Songs of the Queen of Country Music" paid tribute to country pioneer Kitty Wells and reflects Laura’s longstanding interest in preserving and exploring the history of country music.

She’s also had a parallel career in radio, beginning at @wfmu with her long-running country and old-time music program The Radio Thrift Shop and later hosting Dark Horse Radio, devoted to George Harrison, on @siriusxm ’s #Beatles Channel.

Come hear Laura Cantrell on November 5 interpret the music documented by Alan Lomax at the Association for Cultural Equity’s first benefit concert at St. Ann’s Church in Brooklyn Heights! Ticket link in bio.

Joining Laura are Peter Stampfel (Fugs, Holy Modal Rounders), Kyp Malone (TV on the Radio), Catherine Russell (Steely Dan, David Bowie), Luther Dickinson (The Black Crowes, North Mississippi Allstars), Grace Bergere, and Stephanie Jenkins, each performing their own unique takes on songs from the digital archive of the Association for Cultural Equity, with Dom Flemons (Carolina Chocolate Drops) hosting the evening.

Support ACE’s next chapter as it continues its decades-long mission to safeguard, research, and share the world’s traditional music and dance, and to reconnect people and communities with their creative heritage. Your contribution helps put the collections of the Lomax Archive at the service of communities of origin, emerging cultural leaders, students and teachers at all levels, and the scientific community.

All ticket proceeds go towards ACE’s restoration and digitization efforts, community partnerships, and public programming. Your support helps ensure that Lomax’s legacy and ACE’s work continue to reach and inspire a new generation of artists, audiences, researchers, and activists dedicated to sustaining and reimagining the world’s cultural traditions.

Performances will follow the New York premiere screening of Lomax’s rarely seen 1961 film “Ballads, Blues, and Bluegrass” featuring riveting performances by Doc Watson, Roscoe Holcomb, Willie Dixon, Memphis Slim, Jean Ritchie, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Peter LaFarge, Ernie Mars and The Greenbriar Boys.

This benefit is the kick off event of the Brooklyn Folk Fest, presented by our partner, Jalopy Theatre. Ticket buyers will receive a discount code for the following three days of the Brooklyn Folk Festival.

When this video popped up in my Instagram feed by an artist with whom I am unfamiliar (@laurarcantrell), I immediately assumed the algorithm was alerting me to the painting behind her (by artist Steve Keene, I have learned). But when I looked closer and saw it was because it was jointly posted by @grotonhillmusic, I pretty much just went ahead and bought a ticket. It’s going to be a busy week in late October into early November when I see three shows at Groton Hill in seven days!
