FOR @playstationau There is magic in pressing Start, and leaving the world behind, where ordinary days melt into shadows The screen becomes a doorway, and I step through the looking glass. For a moment, anything is possible And when the PlayStation goes quiet, the universe folds back into the screen, but like a dream that refuses to fade, a little piece of me is still wandering within. Most photographers want to shoot campaigns. But knowing when you’re ready, and how to execute once a client is involved, involves more than just great images. The work needs to solve a problem, understand the audience, fit the brand and deliver something useful. That was the focus of my last workshop! From Portfolio Work to Paid Creative Jobs. We looked at what changes when photography becomes commercial work: understanding briefs, managing expectations, discussing usage, planning production and creating images with purpose. A huge thank you to our incredible panelists:

@seimsmusic The conversation around what clients actually need from photographers was invaluable. Then we put it into practice. Larry created a live Urban Decay Face Bond Luminizer brief, built around the idea of “Glow All Night” — moving away from perfect beauty imagery and capturing the energy, movement and imperfection of a real night out. With @ashleighchurn from @iconmanagement, makeup by @katynichollsartistry, and support from @profoto and @sonyalpha.anz, we brought the brief to life. I’ve included Larry’s original creative direction so you can see where we started, the decisions behind the shoot, and how we translated an idea into images. Huge thanks to everyone who came along, and @nickjamesfraser for capturing the BTS. If you’re interested in the thinking behind the image, our next panel Creative Direction for Image Makers is happening this Thursday at @lunar.syd . We’re bringing together photographers, creative directors and producers to talk about how ideas are built, shaped and executed. It’s going to be a good one.

Last week we had the pleasure of hosting this incredible panel with @charlottemelissarose @katesullivan000 and @laurasandrawatson about kickstarting careers in image making. The discussion sent it around all the important things required to get industry, client and brand recognition in order to capitalise on your visual skill set. Big thanks to @lunar.syd who we are working on this incredible series of events with and @sonyalpha.anz for sponsoring and supporting it! And special thanks too @Profoto for lighting us up! Catch the next one in July head to our @humanitix page for more! Link is also in our bio. As well as an article with some of the advice our experts gave us! If topics like this interest you we still have tonight’s workshop with @ofoliver on building out your portfolio with guests @christophernpearce and @bygracie.s Images by @clydevaughan.dop
