Storyboard artist and comic creator @laurbits draws parallels between her two worlds on the pod: “My place in this [animation] pipeline is to visualize for the first time what the writers have envisioned with words. I think of it like making comics for film.” She describes her daily work as “lots of drawing, thinking, sketching, figuring out shot flow” and says that while a background in comics gives her “a bit of a leg up,” animation has its own unique demands: “The images are moving in time, and you’re limited to the panel – as opposed to having the creative layouts that comics have.” An Art History major, she credits diverse classes she took at UC Berkeley (about feminism, Japanese art, and American architecture) as well as an inspiring art history professor in community college for changing her perspective toward art: “It was my first time being taught why artists like Leonardo, Michelangelo, and their works were significant. It opened up this lifelong appreciation for critical analysis of media, art, film… I walked away from the class feeling empowered with the skill of visual analysis, which is the ability to look at art, explain what you’re seeing, and how it affects you as a viewer, and then link that with the context. Who is the artist? What was it made for? The study of art history provided me the knowledge of, why are you making art? What is the effect of the stuff you make? Are you perpetuating harmful stereotypes? I find all of that valuable for my personal work. If I find issues in the work I do for studios, I’d be the first to flag it down. ‘Doesn’t that sound kind of sexist?’ I’m not always successful when we try to do that, but I’m committed to try to do less harm by being aware of [our] effect and what the art is saying." @laurbits chats with us about turning her love for drawing into a full-time job as a storyboard animator in LA for the likes of DreamWorks & Nickelodeon, and drawing Disney characters for work. We also discuss the Philippine animation industry, her foray into self-publishing her original comics, the challenges of traditional publishing, and the modern challenges of being a creator – i.e., being expected to be a one-man sales, marketing, and finance team. On turning down movie adaptation offers for her original comic book / graphic novel: "I’ve held onto my IP (intellectual property) even though people have come to me with offers for film rights… I want to do my due diligence. Everyone’s desperate for content right now. A lot of money is flowing everywhere, but I want to make sure that whoever wants to adapt ‘Polterguys’ gets it right. You only have one chance. I don’t think I’ll be as lucky as, say, ‘Fantastic Four,’ which gets rebooted four times…I hope they get it right.” On the teamwork required in her work for studios: "Animation is a very collaborative medium. The best crews that I’ve been on have been open to ideas from several people, not just following one person’s vision. I think that being open to everybody’s input makes the work better – more heads to a problem.” We had to cut this episode for time, but we put all her media recs on IG for the comic lovers out there. How powerful are cartoons? The final episodes of Voltes V were banned during Martial Law in the Philippines. The reason cited? Concerns about the effect of violence on children. A common audience reaction? Perhaps the mecha anime's theme of young resistance fighters battling an oppressive regime hit too close to home for the censors 🤖 Stories matter, as we discuss with @laurbits, a storyboard artist & comic creator from Manila now based in LA. Laur studied History of Art at UC Berkeley, where she majored in & wrote her honors thesis on manga and female representation. In 2012, she won a Xeric grant and launched a successful Kickstarter campaign for her self-published young adult comic series "Polterguys." She successfully deployed her lifelong passion for drawing & storytelling to a career in animation by 2017. She has worked for the likes of DreamWorks and Nickelodeon, doing storyboard animation for properties such as Star Trek, Madagascar, Cleopatra in Space, Deathstroke, and Puss in Boots. Laur gets real with us about being lost in her twenties, finding her way back to her first love of drawing, turning down movie offers (!) to adapt her comics, how the manga & anime fandom went mainstream (fans include @realbarbarapalvin, @michaelbjordan, and Olympic athletes), and universal advice on the dangers of burnout & the importance of boundaries between our personal and professional lives. This episode is dedicated to all artists making their voices heard and standing up for truth in darkness. This episode drops at the same time as the May elections in the Philippines. As Laur and I discuss on this episode, representation matters. Your voice matters, and every vote counts. See you at the polls ✨ 🚨 Follow us on Spotify, Apple, or wherever you get your podcasts to catch the ep when it drops! . . . OCCUPATIONAL HAZARDS is a series of candid conversations with inspiring people as they share their path to finding their calling and all the gritty realities of their jobs. Whether you want to demystify your dream job or get a peek into other people’s work lives, this is the podcast for you. ☕❗⚠️
