‘The Other Chelsea Flower Show’ - my article in this weekend’s @ft_houseandhome - thanks to @beatricehodgkin and @laureni for the commission and to @royalhospitalchelsea especially Ric Glenn for showing me around the allotments, raised beds and the wider estate gardens and to the Chelsea Pensioners for sharing their horticultural stories with me as well as @davegreen00 for giving me the opportunity to volunteer on his gold award winning London Square Chelsea Pensioners Garden in 2025 which has now been relocated within the grounds. Burford Garden Company is billed as a garden centre but it is not that, exactly. The sprawling, 21,000sq m complex off the A40 route to the Cotswolds sells perennials and bulbs, but it also houses a bookshop, children’s boutique, a warren of rooms dedicated to foodstuffs, clothes, contemporary art and homewares, and a café and bakery decorated in the French brocante style. It’s the kind of place you might go for a shrub rose and leave with a Margaret Howell shirt, a tin of Perello olives and a birthday present for your three-year-old niece, says @laureni.
