My biggest heartbreak…it wasn’t supposed to end here. Words cannot describe how hard this is. It feels like something I was so dearly promised has been stolen from me. Crossing that finish line for the last time hurt more than any pain I’ve ever known. Saying goodbye to my teammates and the thing that gave me a purpose, was the most devastating thing I’ve ever felt. It doesn’t feel real.
When I first joined cross country, I had no idea the impact it would have on me. I absolutely fell in love with the sport and the people who ran along side me. I will carry every lesson it has taught me through the rest of my life. This sport has changed my life.
Cross country has taught me pain, resilience, patience, confidence, grit, and perseverance. It has taught me that I am capable of accomplishing more than I thought I could. Not only will I take the lessons it taught me, but the memories as well.
From summer running, the laughter, team meals, the meets, the feeling of crossing the crossing the finish lines, and the practices, it has filled my heart with so much love and gratitude. Every part of this sport will have a special place in my heart and I’m filled with gratitude for every person who has supported me throughout this chapter in my life.
I thank God everyday that he gave me the ability and the strength to wake up, move my body, and to try again. I’m so grateful that I can honor God by using the gift he gave me, running.
I would also like to thank my coach, my parents, my teammates, my teachers, and all of the parents supporting me throughout my time in cross country. I would not have come this far without them.
Within this sport, I found a second family, a purpose, and a reason to get back up and try again. So no, cross country isn’t just “running” it’s the memories, the friendships, the lessons, and the person you become along the way. It’s the most mental, challenging, draining, competitive sport I’ve never known, and I love it.
No matter what, I believe we still won.
