POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

A West Charlotte storefront that once symbolized hope for a Haitian immigrant now sits dark, locked, and empty. The shell of what once was The Queens Beauty Supply and Fragrances is now a symbol of Marjorie Stewartson’s shattered dream.

“I still can’t believe it happened to me,” Stewartson told WCNC Charlotte on Friday. “It’s just like I’m in a nightmare. It’s like you’re dreaming and you try to wake up.”

Stewartson is one of dozens of entrepreneurs across the country who have accused Beauty Supply Institute, a company that marketed itself as a launchpad for Black business owners, of failing to live up to promises, leaving some broke and businesses closed.

As a result of the great investigating of my friends at @11alive, the Georgia Attorney General’s Office recently took legal action against the Atlanta-based company. A settlement now requires BSI to either stop operating in Georgia or pay an almost $2.2 million penalty.

Stewartson, meanwhile, is suing the company, hoping she can recover, at a minimum, the $70,000 she says she paid BSI.

So grateful @frisbie_investigates @rebeccanews11alive @jennifertituson10 and my other TEGNA friends are such big believers in collaboration. It makes an impact!

Over the past couple of days, we have had 2 students and an educator volunteer by helping us put kits together.

They know what qualified looks like and they know @charlittahatch is here for them. For all our kids. For their classrooms, their teachers, their joy, and their future.

Whether stuffing bags, greeting neighbors, or proudly wearing their buttons, these kids are already making their voices count.

We need you to log in, so we can level up, and lead forward with the children top of mind.

Next stop: @mhatch50 and I took the kids on a @royalcaribbean cruise with @foreverashley2017 @crysw32 @lawduane. The kids had a ball with science experiments, soccer, Gaga ball, arts and crafts, beach and pool days, boardwalk carnival, ice cream all day and late nights.

My highlight was seeing the brilliance of our children come together. The imagination and vocabulary of the girls and the clever riddles and jokes of the boys made me so happy. 🤗

#Summer2025 is off to a great start! Thank you @foreverashley2017 for planning. #familyvacations #summercruise #utopiaoftheseas

Last night was an empowering night as we heard from @judgearetha speak about leadership and what that truly means. My favorite takeaway is that leadership is about leaving a legacy! May it live on within our Bar.

Freshman Year vs Graduation Day

We may or may not have found photo evidence of Lawrence waiting for Crystal in Wheatley Hall's lobby (swipe to see). Check out our feature on the Woodens to learn more about their connection to Wheatley Hall (link in bio).

What was your freshman dorm?

Black lives matter. Black love is revolutionary. Meet the Woodens. They met on the set during freshmen week 2001 and not too long after Crystal caught Lawrence accidentally walking into the ladies' room by the Cafe. Here they are almost 20 years later.

Name: Lawrence and Crystal (Bowers) Wooden
FAMU Degree(s): Both SBI MBA graduates
Hometown: New Orleans, LA and Phenix City, AL
Current Location: Charlotte, NC

Social Media:
Him: @lawduane
Her: @crysw32

Why FAMU?
Lawrence and Crystal both did HBCU College Tours. They both fell in LOVE with SBI and were immensely impressed by Dr. Mobley (Dean Emerita of the FAMU's School of Business and Industry).

Do you remember Lawrence and Crystal? Find out more about this FAMU 8701 couple on our blog. (link in bio)
