Layal Balubaid (@lay.al) is a London-based Saudi fashion designer who describes her practice as “fashion that is fun and awesome i hope.” The hope seems unnecessary. Her shapes are considered and sculptural, with polka dots, ballooned proportions that reimagine a dress or a skirt. Personal details such as the shemagh, the checked headscarf worn by men across the Gulf, appears often. Her first ones came from her dad, worn through with holes, and she has since made them into bows, boots made from the scraps, and a print. She drapes on a body before cutting any pattern, because “the eye can be so much quicker,” and she makes everything to order herself. When looking at her work, try notice the small details as she puts the most thought into them.

Gingersss is a contemporary fashion editorial inspired by the nostalgic aesthetic of 1990s yearbook photography. It reimagines the classic school portrait to challenge the way ginger hair has traditionally been perceived as something to hide, tease, or associate with being an outsider. Instead, the series imagines a world where ginger sets the standard for cool, transforming a once-stigmatised trait into a source of confidence and desirability.’
