I bought this longboard off a guy in Noosa on my way down the coast from Cairns to Victoria. It was the first board I’d owned in two or three years, and it changed everything surfing was to me. Everything in the water became so simple, and that simplicity birthed great intricacy. It no longer mattered what I did on a wave—if ever, only to a small degree. The fact of the matter was, neither the ocean nor the board gave a fuck. They both did and went wherever the hell they wanted to. I could no longer just tear a wave to pieces. No sir, no ma’am. Good bloody luck. Lines demanded to be drawn precisely and timed immaculately. Even the paddle out or lineup positioning left little room for error. Surfing became one whole experience of coming and going from the ocean skilfully and artfully with minimal damage to one’s board or self. Some boards demand constant input. Others simply ask you to trust them. The magic is in that first moment after take-off, when everything settles. No chatter. No speed wobbles. No hopping to find trim. Just smooth, uninterrupted acceleration. My 7’0” single fin doing exactly what it was built to do on a close-hauled wall near home.
