Hay! It’s the GOAT Aunt @lbalton’s birthday! What better occasion to look back at some photos from Balton Summer Camp at her farm in Virginia last month. Hope you have an egg-citing birthday… I’ll pony up for a gift if we can exchange some ruff puns soon!

Uncle Mike was the cool Balton.

A hipster ahead of his time, Uncle Mike grew up in Brooklyn, and never found a reason to leave. He valued staying true to his roots — so much so, he started his own family within walking distance of the Williamsburg apartment he grew up in, above his father’s funeral home.

Long before social media, Uncle Mike was the OG creator. He was an artist. He made music. He made jokes. He wrote. He introduced me to home digital video editing with his hilarious early-2000s iMovie creations. He taught me the correct way that an apostrophe should point before the two-digit abbreviation of a year. He hosted wedding interview videos that (for better or for worse) have inspired his nephews. And of course, he had just a minor role in creating two of my favorite human beings — my cousins Katie and Max.

In all his creations, Uncle Mike was careful and confident with his words. Behind his meticulously calculated rhetoric, Uncle Mike was so warm, so welcoming, so inviting, and… so cool.

Uncle Mike was diagnosed with Parkinson’s about 20 years ago. This terrible and confusing disease is something that broke my innocence as a child, when I watched my Grandpa John Kenneally suffer from it.

Thankfully, we had many meaningful memories together since Uncle Mike’s diagnosis. When I was a sophomore in college, I interned with MTV Networks. I spent the summer watching Mets games and talking politics with Uncle Mike when I stayed over in Greenpoint a few nights a week.

The memories were great. The Mets: not so much.

How thankful for Uncle Mike am I? Well, the Baltons have spent many Thanksgivings in Greenpoint. In my life, the very meaning of Thanksgiving requires a meal in Brooklyn. It was at one of our Brooklyn Thanksgivings that I got drunk and played board games with my extended family for the first time.

We can no longer play Pictionary without an intervention.

Finally printing the final layer of a litho I made ages ago as a visiting artist @northern_illinois_university with the amazing @moconnorg_art who used to be a student there and who now teaches the litho class @chicagoprintmakers …Mary studied with the best litho mentor in the known galaxy @mbarnes333 who invited me out to DeKalb to draw this image on a big honkin rock. The piece was inspired by a photo taken by my dear friend & world reknown location scout @lbalton who has waited long enough to get one of these. Also want to credit the incredible team at NIU who assisted in printing and processing this thing (@elyse_prints @abiraineart @w1ldflower_ink & others). Today’s last layer was a very subtle transparent overlay to “tie the room together”…. The print will make its first appearance at my show @bertgreenfineart that opens July 25, 5-7pm. “Wading”, litho (stone & plate), screen, and some hand tinting. Variable edition. #lithography #printmaking #press @takachpress #photolithography #stonelithography
