Missing this time last week waking up to glaciers 🧊. It was my first family trip since college, our first ever with this arrangement of family, for my mom’s birthday 🎂 — she wanted an Alaskan cruise, but if you know my mom, you know that when she says “cruise,” she means like 40 people tops.

Our lil boat was with Alaskan Dream Cruises, a Native-owned and -focused company, and man we really saw all the animals 🐋 and drank all the drinks 🍹 and thought about cultural assimilation and sovereignty.

I read 3 books and gained 10 pounds. My partner and I fought in a tandem kayak. My aunt tapped the keg of kolsch. We got my mom small presents for every day leading up to her birthday, “7 days of Trudy.” We ate the legs of many crabs 🦀.

Alaska is stunning and vast and we saw only a teeny bit of it, the southeast inside passage. The water was glassy smooth. Killer whales popped up under rainbows 🌈 to check us out. The major towns we stopped in had fewer people living there than I had in my high school. The economics are brutal — tourism, oil, timber, fish. It made me grateful for a big city to be queer and an artist. It made me grateful these places exist to remind us how effing majestic the world is. When we arrived, two bald eagles greeted us waiting for the ferry into Ketchikan 🦅🦅.
