There’s ageing and then there’s supporting ageing.

While Jayce is a senior dog who’ll be turning 9 (!!!) next month and is definitely less active than he used to be , I’m not letting either of these things get in the way of keeping his body in a good condition as possible to help prevent or reduce the symptoms of ageing.

This includes regular physio and strength and conditioning exercises at home, weighing him frequently to keep an eye on his weight (along with keeping an eye on his overall body condition), weighing his food for each meal to ensure we’re not overfeeding and specifically targeted supplements for Jayce as an individual dog.

While I’m lucky to have to economic freedom to do this, there are lots of free or cheaper online resources regarding dog physio and conditioning online to hopefully make such things more accessible.

Veganism is about respecting animals. That includes feeding carnivores a species appropriate diet.

Some people may say that their dog is vegan and is fine or that vegan dog food exists so must be safe.

While vegan dog foods exist, but the real question is whether they are nutritionally complete. Are they formulated to FEDIAF and AAFCO standards and designed by a board certified veterinary nutritionist.

There are small studies on vegan dog diets, but they come with major limitations. Most lasted around a year, meaning long term health outcomes are unknown. Sample sizes were small. Health outcomes were often based on owner reported observations rather than objective clinical markers.

A very small subset of dogs may do best on a carefully formulated vegan diet under veterinary and nutritionist guidance. For the vast majority of dogs, meat based protein is still the most biologically appropriate option.

Respecting animals means meeting their biological needs, not forcing our personal ethics onto them. If you cannot respect a species appropriate diet, do not get the animal.
