“It’s about time” — and, admittedly, well past time — that we extend our belated gratitude to Pia Singh for lending her care and perspective to her insightful review of IT’S ABOUT TIME: Counterproductive Conceptualisms in Chicago, GRAY Chicago’s summer exhibition.

Organized by Dieter Roelstraete and Abigail Winograd (DRAW), IT’S ABOUT TIME brought together the seemingly disparate practices of ten Chicago-based or -trained artists. Shaped to a discernible degree by the legacies of artists Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle and Pope.L, the exhibition presented a distinctly contrarian strand of conceptualism, one in which this younger generation of artists buck market-driven production to, instead, take their time and use “time” itself as a subject.

“At present, when viewers’ capacity for waiting may be waning,” Singh wrote, “these reclusive, bodily and marginally active works remind us to stay present until our perception shifts.”

Featured artists: Alex Chitty, Shir Ende, Max Guy, Jinn Bronwen Lee, Dave Lloyd, Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle, Devin T. Mays, Pope.L, Nick Raffel, and Miao Wang.

The exhibition was on view at GRAY Chicago from Jul 10–Aug 22.

FINAL WEEK | Self-effacing as they are ambitious, the works in IT’S ABOUT TIME may appear laidback and slapdash. But by emphasizing the importance of time and space — a “Midwestern” alternative to the demands of artistic production — a shared ethos among Chicago artists speaks to a more “counterproductive” version of conceptualism.

Max Guy (b. 1989) works with sculpture, video, performance, assemblage, and installation, using fast, ergonomic ways to make poetry of the world, filtering it through personal effects. In his work, Matrix #2 (to Every House Has a Door), 2026, Guy transforms his former studio table into an assemblage that stages a working prototype of a Foucault Pendulum, using found and custom-made components to register the earth’s rotation through the pendulum’s movement. Dedicated to the Chicago performance group Every House Has a Door, the work transforms the pendulum’s swing into a series of scans, each rendering a precise yet fragmented “sampling of space-time.” The resulting folio of 15 is titled Pendulum Trial (13:58 to 14:05, 19/5/2026, 50PPI-1200PPI), 2026, after the event, duration, date, and resolution.

An artist whose legacy shaped many of the younger practices featured in this exhibition, Pope.L (1955–2023) was a visual artist and educator whose multidisciplinary practice used binaries, contraries, and preconceived notions embedded within contemporary culture. Building upon a long history of arduous, provocative, and absurdist performances and interventions in public space, Pope.L ‘s work invited broader interrogations of language, systems, gender, race, and community. Pushing the limits of what an artwork allows us to know, the exhibition features Pope.L’s Package Received but Never Opened #167, 2015, and Package Received but Never Opened #75, 2015, two wrapped parcels whose contents are deliberately unknown.

SAVE THE DATE: opening 9/19 6-10PM over at the @the_plan_chicago “if-if-if-“ a show about language falling apart & coming together.

Less a “language as material” show and more a poetic or productive conceptualism, the ambition of this exhibition is to embody a meeting point somewhere between visual language, comic book sound effects, and political screed. Operating on the premise that radical form might open up radical practice, the idea is to consider what can, can’t, and still is left to be said in words and language - semantic, formally liberated, artful, or otherwise.

Topics will include: palindromes, silence, distortion, song, phonetics, symmetry, sign & signifier, diatribe, babbles, polyphony, voice overs, translation, onomatopoeia, asemic and poetic writing, slogans, roots, punctuation, and whispers among others.

Opening night performance: “A Catalytic ‘Huh!’ of Asemic Writing” formulated by and featuring Jesse Malmed, Max Guy, Maya Nguyen, Rex Delafkaran, & myself will punctuate the proceedings.
