Snake plants… boring? Never.
Architectural, tough as nails, and basically the cool minimalist of the plant world. 🌿✨
Proof that low-maintenance can still be iconic.

For the past few years my most favorite adult has given me the most thoughtful gifts. This one may have topped them all. My love for plants can’t replace the love I lost, but it certainly helps pass the time. #plantopedia @leaf_supply #houseplants #indoorjungle #love

Cool Friends’ VISIT – Sophia Kaplan, Sydney @sophia_kaplan

A florist and co-founder of Leaf Supply @leaf_supply, Sophia lives in Annandale with her partner and two children. From the triangular window upstairs, she can see her favourite view—the garden below, framed by purple jacarandas, orange silky oaks, and a thriving avocado tree.

Downstairs, her calm home studio is filled with ceramic vases made by artist friends. It’s where she creates floral works for both commercial projects and intimate family celebrations.

Between her floral work, garden design studies, and time with her children, Sophia’s days flow gently between creativity and care—rooted in a life shared with nature.

Cool Friends’ VISIT – Sophia Kaplan, Sydney @sophia_kaplan

Florist and co-founder of Leaf Supply @leaf_supply, Sophia lives in Annandale with her partner and two children. Her home blends vintage and modern pieces with ease, reflecting a quiet, thoughtful style. From the triangular window upstairs, she looks out onto her favourite view—the backyard, where trees and small flowers quietly grow. Below, her home studio fills with branches, vases, and the calm rhythm of her work.

“People expect a florist’s garden to be full of blooms.”
She smiles. “But mine’s mostly green—textures, movement, little surprises.” Chocolate cosmos, gaura, native violets. The beauty is in restraint. “I’m drawn to how plants live together rather than stand out.”

Her love of growing things began in her grandfather’s garden. “Nonno grew veggies and herbs. I’d help him weed and just… stay there.” Those early days among soil and sunlight shaped the way she works and lives now—with patience, curiosity, and care.

“Flowers guide you if you listen.”
On this visit, Sophia was preparing cymbidiums for a baby’s christening. She doesn’t force a design. “Some stems bend, others stand tall. I let them decide.”When not at her bench, she’s out walking bush trails with her children—observing wildflowers, colours, and the way plants grow in nature. Inspiration, after all, comes quietly—from nature itself.

“Gardens aren’t just pretty—they’re responsibility.”
Now studying garden design, she’s learning how beauty can sustain life: logs for insects, birdbaths for visitors, local plants that belong. At home, her children cut stems, name flowers, and watch things grow—small lessons in care, in patience, in wonder.

Sophia’s world is built on respect—for nature, for time, and for the quiet connections that make a family home truly alive.

It’s approaching that time of year here in Portugal when the rain returns after a near five-month hiatus during the summer. Yet this arrival brings with it a familiar sense of dread for me, the fear that my collection of cacti will be inundated with the sweetness of water, drinking greedily until they overindulge, their thirst turning almost abusive.

Before I know it, if I’m not careful, those spiny menaces will implode and deflate, leaving behind nothing but a hollow shell of spines.

There will come a time when I can’t stand it any longer watching the drops slide down the window, day after day and I’ll give in to the urge to bring the most vulnerable ones inside for safekeeping. They hate me for it, but it’s for their own good.

My cactus shelter outside is no longer big enough for the entire family! 🌵
