Yes, and? (2026)

Over the summer, I wanted to push myself to create solely for my own creative joy. No academic assignment, studio requirement, or bigger purpose. Just making something because I wanted to.

I asked around, and I was so excited by how quickly my friends were willing to jump in. This idea had been floating around for months, but we put it to paper just two weeks ago and created this with only about eight hours of rehearsal.

Showing a work in progress is always scary, but this experience reminded me that sometimes you just have to take the risk and make the thing instead of wondering what could have happened if you did.

Blue is often associated with sadness, but in this work, I wanted to reclaim it as a symbol of joy, playfulness, freedom, and possibility. I titled the piece yes, and? after the improvisational principle of accepting what is given and building upon it. Joy and sadness don’t have to be opposites. We can hold multiple experiences at once.

Joy can exist alongside darkness and still exist fully on its own terms. Maybe that’s why joy itself can be a form of resistance.

Huge shoutout to Leah Blake, Sierra Eschliman, Sarah Farrator, Chayton Howell, Mia Jensen, Maggie Loughran, Megan Marasco, Skylar Ostronic, Brinna Stephens, and Haley Walts for being willing to bring this idea to life with me <3

I do not own the rights to this music.
