Give me six hours to cut down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe 🪓 👊🏽

A lot of coaches despise wrapping hands and rightly so, the process can be stressful and time consuming. Over the years I’ve learned to love wrapping hands. It’s a skill I take immense pride in as a coach and one that I am constantly evolving and improving. Most importantly it gives me time to not only calm my boxer down but also myself. It’s akin to moving meditation for me. A time to quiet the voices in my head and focus on a singular task and not all the what ifs you ask yourself before a fight. What do you do to relax before a fight? Comment below!

We don’t chase punches, we chase positions
.
.
.
Sheesh! It’s been a while since I’ve posted a technique video! This week, my team and I are focusing on using positional traps to create striking opportunities. Often, when we think of setting up strikes, we consider feints or showing openings to draw out our opponent’s offense so we can defend and counter. However, we shouldn’t overlook how simple movement can also create opportunities.

In this drill, we use movement to bait our opponent into creating openings for us. We make the first angle change knowing the opponent will need to adjust to stay defensively responsible. Once they make that adjustment, we change angles again to create the striking opportunity we want. Remember, this is a “drill” and is only a tool to help us think about using movement effectively. Live sparring or competitive scenarios may not happen exactly like the drill but training our minds to think about movement this way opens up countless new options and pathways to improving our game.

Comment below and let us know how you use movement to set up your offense. RCA ALL DAY!

We work on athletics not aesthetics 👊🏽
.
The sport of boxing requires proper form and mechanics, but it’s important to remember the true goal: developing the most effective and efficient technique, not just the most aesthetically pleasing one.

Threaten from all angles. Make it a game of how much your opponent can not pay attention to
.
.
.
IMO the uppercut is the most under utilized punch in boxing. The majority of attacks happen at eye level and are for the most part linear. The uppercut is not only an unexpected punch but even when it doesn’t land has the helpful side effect of forcing our opponent to have to worry about attacks coming from angles that are more difficult to see. Our opponent is now placed in the position to have to cover more space defensively. Which in turn creates more opportunities for us offensively.

Advanced techniques are just the mastery of the fundamentals
.

Sometimes you need to dial things back and tighten up the fundamentals. Focusing on precise head movement this week with special attention to efficiency and the minimization of extraneous movement.

Speed is in the body. Quickness is in the mind.
.
.
.
Using a little 2 step sparring to help improve our mental agility and quickness. Drilling this way allows us to drill techniques in a much more granular manner by making the initial attack a set sequence. The attack is still thrown at full speed to keep things live but with less to worry about, the defender can work on refining their defensive techniques and vision.
