“Woods/Water:Entwined,”up through October 25th, at @macrostieart!

Each piece in this series is thoughtfully composed to reflect my presence and connection to the landscape, blending reality with a subtle artistic touch. The challenge I embrace is to preserve water’s inherent beauty while employing just enough manipulation and reorganization to reveal my artistic presence. I aim to share the experience of being by the water, imitating its inherent nature to allow both you and the universe to know that I was there.

Woods/Water: Entwined
September–October at MacRostie Art Center

I’m excited to share a few shots from the opening reception of *Woods/Water: Entwined,* a collaborative exhibition between basket weaver Shannon Lucas-Westrum and myself, photographer Jeremy Simonson. This exhibit intertwines our love for nature—through my photography and Shannon’s intricate basketry—capturing the beauty and fluidity of woods and water.

These images offer just a sneak peek of what’s on display. If you’re in the area, stop by MacRostie Art Center to see the full collection in person.

There’s a lot happening in #GrandRapidsMN this weekend! Friday is the community’s monthly #FirstFridayArtWalk and I’m so excited my college classmate @lean2studio ‘s photography will be at @macrostieart; the reception there is 4-7pm and I can’t wait to see his artwork. 📷🖼️ Then, I will be performing over at @unwined.upnorth from 7-9pm; if it’s warm enough, I’ll be playing my #originalmusic outside on the deck. 🌤️🍷🧣

BONUS — It’s @grandrapidsriverfest weekend! 🎶💙✨

I have great respect for the arts community in the Rapids area. Being my show is the night before the music festival, I hope to meet new music lovers and fellow fans of @kaxe_kbxe and look forward to sharing an evening of stories and songs. 💛

Woods/Water: Entwined
September through October at MacRostie Art Center
Photography by Jeremy Simonson & Basket Weaving by Shannon Lucas Westrum
Opening Reception: Friday, September 6, 2024, 4-7 PM

Join us for a unique exploration of nature’s beauty and craftsmanship!

Jeremy Simonson presents his photographic series inspired by the ever-changing waters of northern Minnesota. Living near various bodies of water, including the headwaters of the Mississippi River, Fishhook River, and Strawberry Lake, Jeremy has been captivated by water’s pure essence. His images reflect its shifting moods, vibrant colors, and the magical play of light that has become central to his creative journey.

Jeremy’s connection to water began in his youth but took on new depth around 2014 while working on Man Trap Lake near Park Rapids, MN. During evening walks along the shoreline, he became mesmerized by water’s reflective and transformative nature. This meditative experience inspired him to capture the water’s beauty, creating photographs that blend reality with an artistic vision.

Each piece in this exhibition embodies Jeremy’s deep connection to the landscape. Through his lens, water becomes more than a subject—it’s a medium of reflection, transformation, and presence. His work aims to convey the ethereal beauty of water and its profound connection to the human spirit. Jeremy invites you to experience the serenity and wonder of water, encouraging a deeper appreciation for this vital resource.

Don’t miss the chance to immerse yourself in this evocative exhibition and witness the delicate balance between reality and artistic expression.

We look forward to welcoming you!

NOW ON VIEW: Madeline Bialke’s ‘The Long View’

Newchild is thrilled to announce Madeleine Bialke’s institutional exhibition at the Nemeth Art Center, a non-profit arts organization and gallery space located in rural northern Minnesota. Over the past six weeks, Madeleine Bialke has been participating in the residency program at the Nemeth Art Center and has been invited to take part in a new exhibition titled ‘The Long View’, will run through September 28th, 2024.

‘The Long View’ presents ten paintings created by Madeleine Bialke during a two-month long residency at the Nemeth Art Center this spring and summer in Park Rapids, Minnesota. Some of the scenes depicted are memories from Madeleine’s childhood summers spent on her grandmother’s property in the woods around Straight River, south of Park Rapids, full of paths, ponds, dark woods, and meadows. Other compositions were born directly from the area around the residency house and studio, as well as Itasca State Park, where virgin timber—white and red pine— still stand. The past shapes how the present is seen. In ‘The Other Side,’ a scene of dead tamarack rot-resistant trunks looming out of the Straight River, the skeletons are still physical, lively and full of character. In these works Madeleine seeks to find new life in a place once thought lost, and aims to express that family ties, if strong enough, can live beyond time.

OPENING SATURDAY: Madeleine Bialke’s ‘The Long View’

Madeleine Bialke’s ‘The Long View’ opens at the @nemethartcenter this Saturday, July 13th, from 4-6pm in Park Rapids, Minnesota. The exhibition will feature 10 new paintings created during Bialke’s two-month residency at the Nemeth Art Center.

Bialke’s work is characterized by post-apocalyptic depictions of forests and landscapes, exploring romantic ideas of sublimity. Growing up in Upstate New York near the Adirondack Mountains, she became captivated by the power of nature and humanity’s insignificance. Her compositions confront the viewer with scenes that echo the experience of a lifestyle closely intertwined with nature, now in its twilight.

Within her practice, Bialke uses color to evoke and convey emotion. The new works engage our psyche with wide values, contrasting hues, and gradients that appear deceptively natural, presenting a realism that feels unsettlingly familiar. Her skies, though depicting natural transitions, are marked by uncharacteristic colors: poisonous warm oranges, pinks that shift to greens, and then to lavender and mauve. These colors might reflect a changing environment, with atypical hues appearing like polluted gradients, symbolizing the balance and imbalance between color and nature in an expressionistic way. The distinctive compositions, built of layers upon layers of oil paint on linen, remind us that the natural world is not merely a resource for humans but a living organism in its own right.

The In Between
Hello Friends! I hope you are enjoying the holiday season with plans for a creative new year! Hopefully this rain and ice hasn’t thwarted your holiday plans.
Speaking of ice, I have been obsessed with this lack of snow and have been photographing the ice in all it formations. I am calling the series “ The In Between “ that moment between season that is usually fleeting, but this year, lasting all month. When you get lemons, why not make lemonade! 😂

Wishing you all the best in the new year!
