Deanie is celebrating his 14th birthday. Hard to believe bc he was a stray dog found on a county road in rural AR when he was about 5 months old. Most dogs like Dean find their end long before the age of 14.

He was brought to safety by @charlestondogshelter where he spent 3 months waiting to be adopted. (Black dog syndrome) He wasn't supposed to be ours but after sponsoring his transport north, he made his way to visit us for a day and he never left. Not my doing but my husband and daughter insisted. Detailed story is in my memoir, Piglet.

Deanie is a big barker- very annoying even as an old man. But gentle and sweetness truly are his middle names. Everyone loves him. Susie and Annie adored him with all their love. They were the home team. Annie still relies on Dean for security and now Lucy Lemonade is a big fan. Gina and Dean are good friends and Baby Georgie also admires him.

Every person that visits our house loves Dean the most. He might not have a big social media following but he has a large circle of in person friends.

Three years ago he gradually became very ill. We couldn't figure out why he wouldn't eat and would regurgitate food. It literally took three major workups, consults, and a lot of worry- with no diagnosis. He went from 34 to 26 pounds and I thought he was at the end.

One day I was petting his neck and a large golf ball sized mass popped out from behind his trachea. It was removed and biopsied- malignant thyroid cancer. He began eating that night and returned to normal within weeks.

His senior chapter is very peaceful. He has trouble getting up and walking at times. But he is accepting of the changes and still very happy. Dean stays home some days and others he enthusiastically takes his walks. We help him along and are enjoying his adorable old dog ways.

Happy birthday Deanie.🩷

Come to Dean's zoom birthday party webinar on Sunday night. We will be discussing old dog mobility issues. Link in stories and on our website events page.
