The Bowser Administration’s hub for District families to find afterschool and summer program opportunities for school-aged youth

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

This #LightsOnAfterschool, we’re highlighting how afterschool opens doors to new experiences and learning beyond the classroom! 💡

On October 13, Global Kids students visited the Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream, exploring history and learning more during Hispanic Heritage Month. Experiences like these give young people the chance to connect what they learn to the world around them, discover new perspectives, and step outside their comfort zones. ✨

Afterschool is more than what happens after the school day ends, it’s an opportunity to explore, grow, and see what’s possible!

We’re back, and it feels this good. 🌎
This last week, our students returned to afterschool programs at Ballou HS, Bell Multicultural HS, and McKinley Tech HS, plus our citywide Global Leaders program on Fridays at Southwest Library.

And today, on International Day of Peace, it feels fitting: peacebuilding and understanding the world around us are at the heart of everything we do.

Here’s a first glance at some moments from our first week, and a video of what the year has in store: cultural exploration trips, team-building moments, real conversations about the world around us, and students learning to use their voice for action.

This is more than an afterschool program. It’s where global citizens are made, one experience at a time.
Join us for Citywide Fridays, 4:00-5:30 PM at Southwest Library, near the Waterfront Metro.

If you had to rebuild society, who would you choose? 🤔

That was the challenge our students tackled this week during Week 2 of Tumaini DC’s Blueprint Academy at Phelps ACE High School.

Each character brought unique strengths, talents, and personal challenges.

Students had to make difficult decisions about who would help rebuild a new community, all while engaging in respectful conversations about mental health, addiction, resilience, and the value every person brings.

What started as an activity quickly became a powerful lesson in empathy, perspective, and leadership.

There were passionate discussions, thoughtful disagreements, and moments that challenged students to look beyond labels and see people for their potential.

At Tumaini DC, we believe preparing young people for the future means helping them think critically, lead with compassion, and navigate complex conversations with respect.

This is learning beyond the classroom❤️

Thank you @learn24dc for making this possible! Thank you @syeponthego for another year of hosting + partnership!

What happens when young people are given the tools to create, lead, and dream bigger?

That’s exactly what we’re seeing through Blueprint Academy at Phelps ACE High School.

From entrepreneurship to photography and videography, our students are gaining hands-on skills that prepare them for life beyond the classroom. They’re building confidence, discovering new talents, making meaningful connections, and seeing new possibilities for their future.

As one student shared, “It actually teaches you important things about your future.”

And that’s our goal.

At Tumaini DC, we’re committed to creating spaces where young people don’t just participate—they grow, create, and thrive.

Hear directly from our students and instructor as they share what makes this experience so impactful.

Thank you @learn24dc for making this possible! Thank you @syeponthego for another year of hosting + partnership!

From gliding through Japan on the iconic Shinkansen 🚄 to standing in awe of the breathtaking Mount Fuji 🗻, today reminded us that every journey begins with the courage to move forward.

We ventured beneath the earth through ancient lava wind caves and shimmering ice caves ❄️, then stepped back in time while exploring the historic village of Iyashi no Sato Nenba and the peaceful beauty of Lake Saiko.

Every stop expanded our perspective. Every moment deepened our appreciation for culture, history, and the beauty of the world beyond our own.

Dream boldly. Explore fearlessly. Lead globally. 🌍💫

D.C. students from Benjamin Banneker Academic High School participated in an all-day service experience with Sasha Bruce Youthwork, exploring the realities of youth homelessness and supporting residents through cooking, organizing activities, and sharing messages of encouragement.

The day was a powerful reminder that youth leadership starts with understanding community needs and taking action to support one another. As well as a reminder of how @sashabruceyouth and Global Kids are both working for a world where our youth are protected.
