Thank you to the Boys and Girls Club of the Tar River Region for being such incredible hosts for the debut of our special edition of Barnstormers: Determined to Win - a #NegroLeagues #VirtualReality experience developed by the incredible Derek Ham, Ph.D. of North Carolina State University and Logic Grip. The kids (and several "big kids" like BGCTRR Director Ron Green, CEC) had a blast playing ball with Hall of Famers Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson and Rocky Mount's own Buck Leonard! We look forward to sharing this experience all over #NorthCarolina this year! Reposted from @rmtelegram : New ways for children to connect with the past was the focus Sunday for “A Day With The Greats” sponsored by the Buck Leonard Association for Sports and Human Enrichment at the Lucy Anne Boddie Brewer Unit of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Tar River Region. The event was “a celebration of black history and the Negro Baseball League” and children learned through a virtual reality game, videos, historic coloring pages and a chance to ask questions of the son of a former player. “We try to explain about what it was like and what happened — but now, with virtual reality, they can get in the park themselves and hear the crowds, pick up a bat and feel the flavor and excitement,” said Rose Fox-Hunter, executive director of the Buck Leonard Association. Hunter, who is Buck Leonard’s stepdaughter, was visibly glowing as she spoke with quiet pride about Leonard and other players of the Negro Baseball Leagues. Hunter spoke about the importance of remembering history — and its people — because they can so easily be forgotten. Brian Patterson, vice president of operations of the Buck Leonard Association, agreed... “This event is to bring awareness to Buck Leonard, a hometown hero, who was celebrated elsewhere, like Pittsburgh, more than he ever was here,” Patterson said, adding that Sunday’s event was also meant to showcase the contributions of the Negro Baseball Leagues as far as breaking the color barrier and contributing to Civil Rights."
