Friday — Art Week Tampa

Friday, February 20, 2026

Art Week Tampa continues with standout exhibitions and exploration on the University of South Florida campus:

Contemporary Art Museum at USF – Open 10:00 AM–5:00 PM
Visit the CAM for BRIAN MAGUIRE: LA GRANDE ILLUSION
La Grande Illusion is a major exhibition of works by internationally acclaimed artist, Brian Maguire. The exhibition spans two decades of work that spotlights the artist’s lifelong quest to draw attention to global injustices, war, and human rights. One of Ireland’s leading cultural figures, Maguire has turned the practice and tradition of painting into acts of visual testimony. Maguire’s paintings are global in scope and are derived from projects undertaken between 2007 and 2024 in Mexico, the Mediterranean, Syria, Sudan, the United States, and the Amazon. Maguire’s artworks are painted from direct experience and involve the artist spending extensive time on the ground with the communities that welcome him. The results are, plainly put, paintings that visualize the commonality of human suffering and dramatize the plight of people in need.

USF Graphicstudio – Open ~10:00 AM–5:00 PM
Step inside Graphicstudio, the internationally renowned print workshop where artists and master printers collaborate on ambitious editions and experimental work in print and multiples.

Then head into the evening:

Lease Agreement | 5:00–8:00 PM
Reception for Cooper L. Gibson’s “606-312-2004.” Through spare, atmospheric photography, Gibson explores how public spaces operate as sites of queer desire—moving between a cruising site in Daniel Boone National Forest and an adult arcade on “Family Circle,” tracing longing, secrecy, and the lingering charge of place.

✨ASK A CURATOR✨ chat with Adam Farcus of Lease Agreement!!

Hey art friends! Today I’m releasing my very first ✨ASK A CURATOR✨ chat!

Back at the beginning of October (which feels like it might as well have been a year ago) I had a conversation with artist and curator Adam Farcus. Adam curates Lease Agreement @lease_agreement —an artist-run space where they show work out of their home—wherever that may be at the time.

We chatted about a lot of things! Such as how to reach out to curators, making sure your proposal is organized, the pitfalls of artist statements, and the differences between artist statements and project statements. It was a long conversation, so I’ve split it up into two parts! And I’m releasing Part 1 today!

One thing that really stood out to me as I was re-listening to our conversation was a part at (42:34) where we discussed the anxiety of wanting your artist statement to sound smart. It’s something I’ve heard from many of the artists I’ve worked with. They feel that in order to get more opportunities, their applications need to sound smart. I loved Adam’s response to this,

“I almost want to say that this is actually not about what you are writing because if you are doing all of the things we are talking about, you’re writing a good…or the best statement that you can. I feel like the thing about having a “good” or “smart” statement is about the kind of competitive nature of receiving an exhibition from a proposal. It’s really easy and super hard to avoid the framing that your application wasn’t good enough so it didn’t get accepted.” (43:16)

THIS! This is so true! It is extremely difficult to avoid framing a rejection letter as—my application wasn’t good enough. Or even worse—my work isn’t good enough.

Which is why I’m releasing Part 1 today—because it’s a great accompaniment to my co-working group Applying for Things Together! It’s these types of conversations that I’m interested in and excited to have with the participants in the co-working group! And as a reminder—✨WE START IN 2 DAYS!!✨

Adam and I had a fantastic chat and I can’t wait for you all to hear it! It comes out tonight in my newsletter—so if you want to hear more from Adam make sure you sign up! The link is in my bio!

I had the pleasure of lecturing on my studio, curatorial, and teaching practices in @lauraanderson_art ‘s class at Lincoln Land Community College this week. The students had great questions and in setting up my slideshow I realized that I’ve done a lot more with music and scores than I had thought.
The last slide contains the scores we made via mail and used for the Llano Estacado Monad Band album 🔊🎼

Programmes for last nights screening @lease_agreement

“The Shore of a Day”

Friday, September 2, at sunset (7:30pm)
free admission

Lincoln Arts Institute
112 S. McLean
Lincoln, IL

curated by Lease Agreement

Lease Agreement and the Lincoln Arts Institute present a screening of short video art and experimental documentary works by artists and filmmakers in conjunction with the exhibition, “Inhabiting Rivers, Unfinishing Circles.” Both the exhibition and “The Shore of a Day” address the importance of indigenous knowledge, erasure of labor in our built environment, and the history found in flotsam and jetsam. The screening also expands these ideas to include subjects such as ancestral ceremonies, the trauma from and resistance to war, personal and family histories, systemic racism, and the notion of ‘home.’

“The Shore of a Day” includes work by Eman Al-Zubeidi, Stefani Byrd, Paweł Grajnert, Sky Hopinka, Alex Ingersoll, Esther Johnson, Billi London-Gray, Alex Morelli, Tomonari Nishikawa, Kyungwon Song, and Ruby Que.

The screening program is about one hour in length and includes an intermission. The screening will be held in the third-floor Moses Pinkerton Gallery of the Lincoln Arts Institute.
