We have Aussie skaters to thank for inspiring the all-female shoe brand, Gallaz, owned by Globe Industries in the late 90s and early 2000s. In April 1999, the Girls Street Skate Jam was hosted in Melbourne and even TransWorld noted the event in their June 1999 Industry report. Top results were Sal Clark @clark_cole1 , Sally Affleck @salaffo Hilary Pearce @leatherdaddy Colleen Hughson, Jo Harrison and Alicia Saye! In the book, Unemployable (2016) by Jason Boulter, Globe co-owner Mike Hill said, “We saw the number of girls skating the street and parks in the late ‘90s, Stateside and Oz, and thought these girls were real skaters with real talent. The artistic and commercial gap was evident so Globe came in with Gallaz to be the only brand to fill this gap. Gallaz was a big success from the get go!”

To launch the brand, another contest was held in 2000 with Gallaz as the sponsor won by Monica.Shaw @kokomo_ who became sponsored along with @_jaime_reyes (SHOF inductee 2025!), @vanessatorres @amycaron @laurenmollica Lyn Z Adams Hawkins @lynzskate Violet Kimble @v_pop, and @georgiematilda. The Gallaz / Globe World Cup became a defining annual contest for female skaters by 2002 (with Caron winning a car and $2000). In the lead-up to the event, Dave Carnie of Big Brother wrote a crucial article about the team, who were then celebrated in the film, “AKA: Girl Skater” (Hill 2003) with footage by @lisawhtkr, and “You Remind Me of Me” (Brisick 2005).

Gallaz also expanded their support to Europe, sponsoring Skate Jams in France and Germany, sponsoring international riders like Steffi Weiss @moststeffinetly, Emile Rougier, @ianireelorriaga, and Sophie Poppe among many others. Monica Shaw said that “Gallaz was one of the only companies at the time willing to put down the dollars for us to travel around and I am truly grateful for the experience.” The Gallaz Skate Jam 8 in 2005 was the last, and the brand was replaced with “Globe Girl” but the vision remained to provide functional skate shoes for smaller feet and support female riders. Thank you Globe! Gallaz gave female skaters inspiration the world round.

Last night a few of us @villa.villa.cola friends were able to have a partial VVC reunion at the artist reception for the ‘Get In The Game: Sports, Arts, and Culture’ exhibition at @sfmoma . We are awestruck, honored, and grateful to be one of many crews / communities / publications / artists to be included in the ‘Unity Through Skateboarding’ show curated by @jeffcheung1 and Gabriel Ramirez.

“Skateboarding has always been about more than tricks and competitions. It is a culture rooted in rebellion, creativity, style, and the pursuit of freedom. This exhibition, curated by Jeffrey Cheung and Gabriel Ramirez, celebrates the dreams and realities of queer, trans, BIPOC, and women skaters as well as the diverse communities that have shaped the sport, despite histories of hypermasculinity and exclusionary attitudes.
Meet the pioneers who broke barriers, from the first women and queer skaters to go pro, to the underground movements that encouraged inclusivity and change in skateboarding.
From skateboards that represent queer and women skaters and artists, to skate publications and zines, to artworks, photo-graphs, videos, and more, the works featured here explore how communities have fostered unity through a shared ethos of passion and determination. Just as skaters who, despite injuries and setbacks, persistently attempt a trick until they land it, Unity through Skateboarding encourages us to keep pushing for a more inclusive world, both on and off the board.“

This show is so mesmerizing. I can’t wait to go back and look at everything more closely. There is so much to see. I think these shows are up through April so if you are in SF between now and then you can go see for yourself!

Thank you so much for including us @jeffcheung1 🎀. We cannot believe these zines we were making in the middle of the night at Kinkos in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s are now in a display case and collaged on the walls of a Museum of Modern Art. 🖼️ 💫
Nobody could have ever convinced us back then when we were making the zines that we would one day be finding ourselves in this scenario.😂💌

Skateboarding is a mysterious portal.
