Celebrated 6 years of marriage in Italy. Had a great, challenging, time exploring Venice, Florence, Pisa, Cinque Terre, Rome, Pompeii, Amalfi Coast and Sicily. My mental health was actually worse on vacation. Dani and I had a great conversation about this on our two week trip to Italy. I was feeling depressed and didnā€™t want to tell her to not be a downer. But she could tell. She can relate. Sheā€™s felt the same way. Sometimes, the feelings are that we are dreading going back to real life. Other times, itā€™s that we feel like we should be able to enjoy ourselves more than we are. Other people enjoy vacation. Other people are having a good time. Why canā€™t we? I think I experienced the stress of travel and some depression because I havenā€™t drank in over a year. Alcohol was a common part of my vacations that would numb some of that pain. But it was usually just amplifying it and delaying it. I didnā€™t give myself the option to NOT feel these feelings on this trip. Also, my entire lifestyle was flipped on its head. I went from 90+ minutes of structured exercise daily, clean diet, dialed sleep, etc to a complete wild card. Tons of refined sugar and gluten which is unusual for me. Donā€™t get me wrong, I had a great time. Feeling a lot of depression and having a great time arenā€™t mutually exclusive. But I am excited. This means that the life I have created at home is actually more desirable than the ā€œescapeā€ I used to crave all the time. I donā€™t have my home life perfectly dialed. But I do love it. 75 Hard for Mental Health Day 50 Love you Dan! Canā€™t wait for all of our fun plans for the future. #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #mensmentalhealth #fitness #mindset #mentalillness #psychology #discipline #motivation #stoicism #75hard #75hardchallenge

I had a particularly gnarly 9 month stretch of depression in 2021. I felt overwhelmed a lot. I can recall a time where I cried 4-5 days in a row. Self harm was abundant. I remember my voice being horse from screaming ā€œF#%$ YOU!ā€ to myself. I threw my phone and put a hole in the wall (phone was ok somehow! Wall was not...). In short, I was in a new position at work, a new manager and tackling my first big, dynamic project. It went sideways. My ego ruined me. I felt so personally responsible for all of the mess and had a ā€œcaptain goes down with the shipā€ attitude. I didnā€™t want to quit. I wanted to see it through. I was absolutely miserable. The hours were long and the project was incessant. I also had abysmal boundaries at this stage in my career. I was convinced that I could grit my way through it. I was constantly haunted by the question Should I change my perception or change my environment? Chunk from my latest article on @leaveitcinders. Lessons learned from winning a 25 year battle with depression. Itā€™s not about making life easy Itā€™s about making life meaningful Itā€™s not about removing stress Itā€™s about embracing stress Itā€™s not about eliminating obstacles Itā€™s succeeding because of obstacles Itā€™s not about avoiding the storm Itā€™s being the eye of the storm #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #mensmentalhealth #anxiety #depression #fitness #therapy #mindset #mentalillness #psychology #mentalhealthmonth
