Looking back at the World Cup, history was made, and we couldn’t be more proud of how the African nations represented.

South Africa not only reached the knockout stage for the first time, but South Africans showed up and showed out throughout the tournament—in the streets and stadiums of Mexico City and Monterrey, in Inglewood, and of course in Atlanta, where they equalized in the 83rd minute to keep their tournament alive.

But the impact of a World Cup goes far beyond the football. Its real value lives in the personal stories, intimate moments and connections that deepen cultural pride, reconnect people with family and heritage, and carry those connections forward.

This is the story of just one.

For South African photographer Lebo Pitse—better known as Lebo Lukewarm—football is rhythm, identity, a connection to home, and now, fatherhood.

The World Cup is truly unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. The amount of conversations, connections, and creativity around this sport that I love is something I won’t forget. And shoutout to Atlanta. Hosted the eventual champions (which I got to see live), eight matches in total, countless events, the best FIFA Fan Fest in the world, and produced a pretty cool map 😉. Everybody fully got behind it, and I can’t wait to see it continue. Cherry on top is my kids are forming a lifelong fandom, which is irreplaceable.
