spring recommendations and tbr 🌼

since spring has just started, even if it doesn’t feel that way at least here in spain, here are some books I’d read in spring based on their vibes.

I’ve also added the books I want to read these next 3 months inspired by @ellereadsomebooks ‘s idea of creating a seasonal reading syllabus. I’ve been creating the seasonal tbr for a couple of years but I feel that this way I’m going to commit to the list (which hasn’t happened before). To make it less stressful I have chosen a main book per week and a secondary book in case I have the time to read two.

you can see the releases I’m excited about this spring, mainly the new Emily Henry, Backman and Ocean Vuong (already got an arc of the latter and will read it soon)!!!

any books you want to read this spring? which one will you add to the list?

(reviews in English on the second and third slides)

💜The Color Purple💜

It took me the longest time to get past that impressive introduction by the author. I kept reading and re reading the first 20 page intro about how the author thinks about God, Jesus and the relationship African Americans and generally Africans share with the "white people's" God. They were taken from their native land, shaved, stripped, humiliated and lashed at for praying to "their" gods and goddesses or worshipping nature. They got rechristened by "proper christian names", got a white washed identity, it broke their spirits and they were put to work under inhumane conditions. Initially they questioned this unfairness but eventually they submitted to their defeat cause their own people sold them as slaves to the white people. The whites pointed to the "good book" citing how the blacks are born to serve the whites and stay servitude.
But even in the times of adversity African Americans ran to the light cause it is their natural instinct "to survive" above anything else. So, they have their own relationship with God/Jesus.
Like Shug says she finds God in living and enjoying her life to the fullest while being able to appreciate everything God has created beautifully in this world to serve his vanity.

Writing Style: Walker's use of epistolary form, with Celie's letters as the primary narrative device, gives the novel a raw and intimate feel. Celie's voice, initially uneducated and limited, gradually evolves as she gains confidence and self-awareness.

Love and Sisterhood: The bond between Celie and her sister, Nettie, is a central theme, emphasizing the importance of female solidarity and support.

Sexuality and Identity: The novel explores themes of sexuality, gender, and self-discovery.

Did I just win the best book transition ever? I've been religiously and meditatively reading the Catcher in the rye, all through christmas and new year and was highlighting and annotating stuff like "Goddam money. It always ends up making you blue as hell" and Holden wanting to live his life as a recluse by not participating in the economy and worldly possessions. It was giving major communist propaganda.
I am not going to lie, I enjoyed this book way too much. Holden is a big phony himself for all the times he called other people being corny and stuff but he's my boy, I am a huge Holden Caulfield apologist. He made me bawl my eyes out. Teenage angst was totally angsting and I loved it.
.
.
Right after finishing the catcher in the rye, I picked up Purple Cow by Seth Godin and realised how in this book Seth is probably going to teach me how to be a remarkable "phony" who sells unnecessary stuff to people by making them believe they must have this. The contrast just threw me off and I started laughing, thinking "Holden would have called you a phony"
.
.
I know as a liberal, I should be against capitalism and all that but I love marketing. I think it is interesting, integrated marketing communication was my favourite subject in college and Madmen is my favourite tv show. So, I have to listen to what Seth has to say even if Holden thinks he's a phony▼・ᴥ・▼

holidays are nearing and that means it’s about time to decide on the perfect gifts for our loved ones.

this is often the moment anxiety and uncertainty start to creep in. it’s surprisingly common to teel stuck, even when choosing presents for those we seem to know best. and that’s why, after hours of agonizing over options, many of us (myself included) end up opting for something as simple as a book. but can it be a meaningful and enjoyable gift if you don’t truly know the person and their tastes?

now that’s what i can help you with. i prepared this small specific christmas gift guide to ease your brainstorming for the upcoming holidays.

swipe & enjoy!
