Alice as Ophelia
The Palms 2026

Archival Pigment mounted on dibond aluminum

Drawing inspiration from John Everett Millais’s Ophelia (1851–52), West reimagines the tragic fate of Shakespeare’s heroine, whose drowning has become an enduring symbol of innocence, vulnerability, and lost agency. In contrast, Alice refuses such resignation. Suspended in dark, reflective water, she confronts the viewer with an unwavering gaze, seeming to demand more than the fate prescribed to her.

The water becomes both a physical environment and a psychological surface, its shifting reflections blurring the boundaries between figure and landscape. Within the broader Domestic Study series, the photograph continues West’s exploration of constructed realities, where the distinction between observation and invention remains unresolved.

Unlike Ophelia, Alice’s fate remains undetermined. Her presence suggests a quiet act of defiance, reflecting a broader assertion of female agency and the refusal to be defined by inherited expectations. She exists between the narrative she has been given and the one she might claim for herself.

A board glowing in the dark, silks and flags rigged over an open airstrip, a tunnel with its own kind of light, and a red-lit set. These are the people who decide what the camera can see, and on Compound 9 they did it in the dark, in the sun and in between.

NEW RELEASE - Domestic Study #2

The goal was to capture a moment that feels observed rather than explained. A woman steps briefly outside the sanctuary of her mid-century home to take in a moment of silence.

The huge agave helps locate the scene while partially obscuring her, and the warm interior behind her suggests comfort, routine, and refuge. The picture feels documented but is carefully constructed, leaving enough unresolved that the viewer has to complete the story.

Nothing dramatic happens here. She simply stops. The moment of silence is the subject.
