We’ve reached the end. Nearly, finally. It’s almost time to get back to the never-ending Great British Pub Crawl, kicking off tomorrow with The White Hart in Eversley.

But first up, a final portion of Q&A. Absolutely ages ago fellow Southwarkman @nmurchu asked: “How long have you lived in London?” I’ve been here most of my adult life, having grown up about 30 miles west of the capital in an area so chopped up and damaged by unsympathetic overdevelopment that big chunks of it are now practically unrecognisable. Some of my favourite pubs were crushed by irresponsible councils, hundreds of years of local heritage lost, my own personal sense of history sullied in the process. I think that might be part of why I care so much about unnecessary greed-led change in this city. That, and I don’t really want to be priced out yet.

We’ll end on an appropriately brutal note. @leecif wishes to know: “Are you an alcoholic?”

Look, according to Allen Carr (the social psychologist, not Chatty Man) we all are – spanning right across a spectrum from the little old granny who has one sip of brandy at Christmas, to the homeless guy lying in the gutter covered in his own K-cider-laced vomit. As for me? I sit somewhere between Ann Widdecombe and George Best. I’m no Ollie Reed or Jeffrey Bernard; I’ll happily sit in a decent boozer with half a pint of diet coke.

We’re all different, our remarkably complex bodies and minds having faced all manner of varying experiences; for some, this leads to a constitution which can handle a battering – and still gets you up in the morning for work or a jog. I do believe drinking is best served as a social activity, not a solitary secret. But you’ll receive no judgement from me. These last 17 bleak months have shown just how much I NEED to see other human beings.

And what’s the point of this long dreary life if we can’t have fun? For me that involves a steady mix of reading, writing, socialising with fine food and a decent brew, all enjoyed within the best possible setting (the pub). To quote that ripe old soak George Meredith, “Good wine lights the candelabra of the brain.” 🍻
