This past weekend was a special one as we had the privilege of hosting the Lees-McRae College Men’s Basketball Team during their trip to Wilmington for their first exhibition game against UNCW.

The team stayed at one of our hotels, Seabirds at Kure Beach, and after some rest and a Saturday practice at UNCW, we welcomed the players, coaching staff and their family into our home for an evening of college football, UFC, dinner, and fellowship.

The timing couldn’t have been better! Just as the team arrived, my son’s AAU basketball coach @ajfrye6_ufc was making his UFC debut. We all gathered around the TV and watched him knock out his opponent in the FIRST ROUND! Needless to say, that got the evening off to an exciting start!

What made the night even more meaningful was having my high school son and several of his teammates there. It was a great opportunity for these younger players to spend time with college athletes, ask questions, and get a glimpse of what playing at the next level looks like.

Later that evening, I had the opportunity to share stories from my own time at Lees-McRae, along with some of the challenges and lessons life has brought since.

My message was simple: Enjoy this chapter. Lean on your teammates, coaches, and professors. Build lasting relationships, take advantage of every opportunity, and most importantly, prepare yourself for life after basketball. The game eventually ends, but the lessons and relationships can last a lifetime.

It was a full-circle moment for me, made even better by watching my son and his teammates learn from these young men.

Special thanks to Carolina Beach Market & Deli for providing the food and to the Lees-McRae coaching staff and their family for spending the evening with us.

Wishing the Bobcats a great season and success on and off the court!

Once a Bobcat, always a Bobcat! 🏀💚💛

FSM welcomes Ja’Quavian Florence to the family!

The 6’4”, 195 lb combo guard brings an explosive game with real scoring versatility, defensive playmaking ability, and the skill set to handle the ball in a secondary role — a guard who’s shown he can impact winning from multiple positions.

In his senior season (‘24-25) at Lees-McRae (NCAA II), Ja’Quavian was the engine of the team, leading the squad in scoring (17.1 PPG), made threes (55), three-point attempts (148), steals (45 total, 1.7 per game), and minutes (28.9 MPG). He started every game he played, finished 2nd on the team in assists with 80 (3.0 per game), and shot an efficient 37.2% from three, making him a legitimate floor-spacing threat. His production earned him All-Conference honors in the Carolina Conference.

He leveled up for his graduate season in ‘25-26, taking his talents to Tennessee Tech (NCAA I), where he settled into the 6th man role and still put together a solid campaign: 17.7 minutes, 6.8 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game, with a 39/31/74 shooting split.

A guard with scoring range, playmaking instincts, and the experience of thriving in different roles at multiple levels. Welcome to the family, Ja’Quavian!

Two Hoopers. Two Stories. 🏀🔥

Last month, we had the opportunity to sit down with Joe Anderson and Nico Ashley for two conversations we won’t forget.

From TN to Europe 🇺🇸➡️🌍 to the State Farm Slam Dunk Championship, both guys brought great stories, insight, and plenty of basketball knowledge to the show.

🎙️ Both interviews are available now on almost all major podcast platforms!

Go check them out and let us know which conversation was your favorite! 👊🏽
