Woon: for the win.

G and I got the hankerin to explore last weekend and ended up at @woonkitchen for a savory lunch of Chinese five spiced wings, cucumber and tofu salad, beef noodles, cold tofu, and tangy orange chicken sandwich. If you haven’t been, you should go. If you’ve already been, you should go back.

A Woon day is a damn good day.

STARTING AT AMP

Most of us are now lucky enough to have found a home, more than a gym, a happy place we look forward to coming, working out is no longer a chore.

Many forget how starting feels. Whatever your background it can be scary to join a new gym, an experienced athlete may have nerves but even more so as a beginner.

We recognise that and try to make the first few weeks as comfortable as possible with in person meetings, check ins and making sure coaches/members know to make them feel welcome.

That has built a culture of members being welcoming and warm to new members. Especially a gym like AMP which has built a reputation as “you lot are crazy”… there is no athletic endeavour I can think of where you get rewarded as much for just showing up. You see the people around you, if you put the work in, you become them.

We’ve seen members that joined in the early days become serial AMP Games / Invitational winners.

We all started somewhere… including us!

My trial class at a CrossFit gym

Warmup:

Handstand against the wall - never been upside down, too scared to try.
DU practice - couldn’t skip singles, no chance of doubles.

Workout:
7 rounds of 7 burpees, 7 handstand push ups, 7 ring dips, 7 pull ups.

Burpees - fine

HSPU - couldn’t kick up to wall. Did pike push up off box, no strength control down - head planted. No strength to push back up so had roll my legs and arse over my head and crash to the floor… over and over.

Pull ups - couldn’t do, got thickest band, no strength to pull it down so had to ask the coach, then just bounced up and down on it for a while.

Ring dips - couldn’t do ring dip, couldn’t support on rings, couldn’t do bar dip, couldn’t support on bars, thick band again.

Couldn’t do anything. Never went back to that gym… but tried another a few months later, stuck it out and here we are.

We all had a first day. Surround yourself with good people, show up, work hard… it will happen.. NEVER compare yourself to others, use them as inspiration but this is your journey and you making a little progress every day will get you there.

so funny how old things find they way back into our lives and feel more special than ever

Eater launched its nationwide BANG BANG dinner series last night with a double barreled back-to-back featuring the flavors of Chefs Ray Garcia (@brokenspanishcomedor) and Deau Arpapornnopparat & Joy Yuon (@holybasil_la). The LA kickoff, hosted at Broken Spanish Comedor, was packed to gills with friends and fans of the two beloved chefs.

The event pairs two dinners in one location for an evening of indulgence, complete with custom cocktails, goodie bags, and good time. Check out the Eater app for the schedule of events across the country - and if this things is heading to your city, you should definitely grab a seat. It’s a lotta fun, a lotta food, and a whole lotta flavor.

🚨New Peruvian spot on the West Side! 🚨

I first read about three-month-old Pontu Chicken in a recent blog post from Karen Stabiner. The Ocean Park newcomer brings flavorful lomo saltado (with an option to add a PERFECTLY cooked egg and a a few ribbons of sweet/salty plantains for $4 - which you should absolutely do), hearty salads, tender chicken, and golden Arroz a la Jardinera to the West Side by way of Perú.

Place your order at the walk up window at (3117 Ocean Park Blvd), grab a seat on their charming back patio, and sip on a refreshing chicha morada while owner Richie Lopez and team work on your goodies. This will most definitely be we will come back to again and again.

So happy we got to hang out with my bud,Tanisha (@girlmeetsglass) in Paris last night.

I was first introduced to Tanisha during COVID on this very app. I watched her talk about moving to Paris (while I should have been working) on IG Live - cause what else could we do between grocery washings?!

Then last year, while I sat in a hotel lobby in Sicily for a wine press trip, guess who the hell walks in! This damn lady! We ended up in the same tour group and have been buddies ever since. She knows just about everything about wine and has become a great friend.

Glad we had the chance to drink more wine together, Tanisha! We have to do it again soon!

A moment for this tomato martini I had last night at @venicesteakhouse.

Gin, fortified with savory, glutamic umami and a subtle slickness from an oil washing present bold tomato flavors and aromas without weight. It’s a sexy sipper perfect for summer.

I like martinis, but can only have one, *maybe* two, tops. This martini made me want four. I’ll definitely be back for more of these and some French fries.
