Radical joy, community, and resilience. For our PRIDE OPEN HOUSE, we transformed the #NYCAIDSMemorial into a vibrant, living sanctuary of music and performance. ⁠

We turned the space into a true dance party and drag extravaganza, illuminating the Memorial in every color of the rainbow. Legendary drag icons Egyptt LaBeija (@egypttjavon), Simone, and Barbara Herr (@thebarbaraherr) turned it out while a powerhouse DJ lineup, featuring Alissa Brianna (@alissathekid), DJ Nikki Jax (@djnikkijax), Astor Lux (@astor.lux) b2b Spencer De Paz (@spencerdepaz), and Eli Escobar (@eliescobarnyc) brought the beats and fueled a beautiful celebration for the community! ⁠

Commemorating the 10th anniversary of the New York City AIDS Memorial (@nycaidsmemorial), 𝘌𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘍𝘭𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘚𝘤𝘰𝘵𝘵 𝘉𝘶𝘳𝘵𝘰𝘯 by Oscar Tuazon (@_water_school_) was unveiled this past weekend as a major new public commission honoring the enduring legacies preserved by the Memorial.

Reimagining sculptor and performance artist Scott Burton's final public installation, the work transforms salvaged elements from the original sculpture into a new site of reflection and collective care at St. Vincent's Triangle.

The unveiling was followed by the Memorial's Pride Open House, which transformed the space through live performances, music, and community gathering.

𝘌𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘍𝘭𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘚𝘤𝘰𝘵𝘵 𝘉𝘶𝘳𝘵𝘰𝘯 is now on view at the New York City AIDS Memorial.

Gonna be seeing @sashavelour travesty in London for my birthday. It’s quite a late birthday present but it gonna be worth it. Sasha velour and nightgowns performances are my inspiration for my style of performance been collecting anything Sasha Velour related including a opening note for @legendsofdrag which is essential for people’s to read because it has older drag artists that their stories that hadn’t been told but now they are in the book. So excited for this

In 2006 David and I made a weekend trip to Kansas City, Missouri for the first time. We went out that Saturday night to Missie B’s and enjoyed one of the best drag shows ever. The most memorable performance of the night was by Sandy Kay as Judy Garland. I was blown away by her ability to capture every nuance of Judy. We’ve referred to that performance many times over the years.

Fast forward to 2016 we moved to Kansas City. To our surprise, Sandy Kay appeared on stage one night at Missie B’s and delighted us all with her amazing impersonation of Judy!

I talked to her afterward and she shared with me that she’s been performing since the 1960’s. What a treat! My hat is off to this queen! Thank you for paving the way for so many who have come after you. Sadly, Sandy passed away this week. Her performances go as far back as the Jewell Box Lounge. RIP queen.

Few living queer elders hold as much of our vital history as Joan Jett Blakk. Her militancy stretches back 50 years— to the Gay Liberation Front in Detroit and the first Radical Faerie gatherings in the Midwest, as a founder of Queer Nation in Chicago, and through ACT UP in San Francisco. She made history in 1992 as the first drag queen to run for president, as a Queer Nation candidate. She says of her campaign: 𝘞𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘳 𝘶𝘱 𝘢𝘴 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘢𝘴 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦.

Her life weaves together the vanguards of the queer movement, Black liberation, punk, drag, and a searing mockery of the dead ends of the electoral system. Joan’s story plays out as the subject of a 2019 play, Ms. Blakk for President, as well as a 2021 documentary, The Beauty President. Now, this queer visionary needs our support. Joan experienced a major stroke in 2024, and will require lifelong care.
