"Leiden brought me a sister for life with lifelong memories." 🙋‍♀️😊

Deniz shared her time as a master's student with her best friend Nazlı:
"We both completed the Advanced Master’s in Financial Law during the academic year of 2024-2025. 👩‍🎓👩‍🎓

We already knew each other from our Bachelor's of Law programme back in Turkey. After graduating and working there for a couple of years, we both decided to come to Leiden for our Master’s, though we had not planned it together. Once we arrived, we started spending more time together, and in a very short amount of time, we became best friends for life.

Leiden University gave us far more than just an education; it brought a sister into our lives. Somewhere along the way, what started as a simple connection turned into something deeper and more permanent. We stand by one another without judgment, in every circumstance and we never lose our laughter.
We love traveling together, one of us planning every detail, the other just goes along for the ride. And of course, ice skating! ⛸️

We have become an inseparable part of each other’s lives. Even though one of us still lives in the Netherlands and the other has moved back to Turkey, we always make time for one another and embrace our long-distance best friendship." 🥇

Deniz: "My Master’s year was the best year of my life. I gained friends from all over the world and received a high-quality education in law. Above all, Leiden brought me a sister for life with lifelong memories. I will forever be grateful to Leiden and the amazing year I had there."

Proud to announce that DFS is invited to be part of the DIVERIS Annual Meeting 2026 in Brussels.

Dialogue for Space will contribute to the 𝐃𝐈𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐒 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐬, where Büşra Dursun and Iulia ter Veer will present how amplifying voices and perspectives that are often unheard, with a focus on those initial steps taken in the process of finding one’s place in the space industry, can help open up the dialogue on youth talent retention and inclusion in (EU) space.

As part of the DIVERIS network, led by the European Commission’s DG DEFIS, Dialogue for Space is determined to contribute to making multidisciplinary youth inclusion in the space and defence sectors more practical, measurable, and action-oriented.

🧠 Hoe meet je thuis (of op een Diesfestival) zoiets complex als hersenactiviteit? Het LUMC heeft samen met partners een meetopstelling, die lijkt op een badmuts, ontwikkeld waarmee je een hersenfilmpje kunt maken om je hersengezondheid te beoordelen. Daarmee kun je de gevoeligheid voor een migraineaanval bepalen. Ben jij benieuwd hoe dit precies werkt? Kom naar het Diesfestival voor alumni en probeer het zelf uit!

🥤 Drink een slushie en ervaar hoe negatieve verwachtingen en angst pijn (onbewust) kunnen beïnvloeden. In nieuw onderzoek wordt gebruikgemaakt van brain freeze, een kortdurende hoofdpijn die kan ontstaan wanneer je snel iets kouds drinkt. Een team van het LUMC onderzoekt hoe pijnverwachtingen en angst de pijnervaring beïnvloeden wanneer iemand (hoofd)pijn anticipeert.

🗺️ Op reis door Nederlands-Indië in de 19e eeuw
Na de ondergang van de VOC werd Indië voor het eerst een echte Nederlandse kolonie. Hoe reisden mensen toen door de archipel? Samen met Scaliger-hoogleraar Rick Honings volgen we drie negentiende-eeuwse reizigers: een natuuronderzoeker, een wereldreiziger en een vroege toerist. Hun verhalen vertellen veel over de tropen en over hun tijd.

"My mom asked me what I was exactly searching for, and then she said 'take a look at this'." 👇💻

Larissa (23) did her Master's in Creative Intelligence and Technology, but finding the right programme isn't always easy:

"When I graduated, I felt immensely happy. That also came from the fact that I invited a lot of family and friends to my thesis defense. Showing them my hard work and passion combined in this wonderful project was one of the many highs of this study. 🤩

Before I landed on this master's, I was pretty bumped out actually. After my bachelor's, I knew I wanted to study further, but nothing even seemed slightly interesting. So one night I came home, frustrated after another "failed" master's open day, and sat down in the kitchen. My mom sat opposite from me and I explained my worries and disappointment.
She asked me what I was exactly searching for, and while explaining, she said "take a look at this". I watched the screen of her laptop and read the pages of Media Technology (now Creative Intelligence and Technology) at Leiden University. I was immediately sold and applied the next day. 😃

I had some ideas of what I wanted to do next, however, these have changed a lot over these past two years. 😅 The most important factor for me regarding my next step is making a change in this world.
Pursuing a PhD would be a dream come true, but it's a really competetive position. However, with or without a PhD, my ultimate goal would be to help people and improve society by sparking discussions about social issues through the use of technology:

Always spread your knowledge and critical thinking skills. In this time of misinformation, hate, and weakening freedom of speech, it's most important to be a vessel of truth and hope rather than to sit silent. Be true to yourself and find something that will give you joy."

"When the post-Erasmus depression set in, I was deeply grateful to have her by my side." 😄🙏

Jana met her best friend Joanna during her Erasmus at Leiden University, or actually already a bit earlier:

"I met my best friend, Joanna, on the very day I found out that I had been accepted for an Erasmus exchange at Leiden University during the fall semester 2024. At the time, we didn’t even know each other. We were both law students, but I was studying law in English, while she was studying law in French, and our acceptance to the Erasmus programme at Leiden University is what brought us together.

Many girls were accepted to Leiden, but I was the only person on the list of acceptance that Joanna didn’t know. She overheard people congratulating me and turned to ask, “Are you Jana?”
When I said yes, she smiled and said, “We’re going to the Netherlands together.” I hugged her with all my strength, and I will never forget that first encounter. From that moment on, we became inseparable. 😃

We loved going to coffee shops together and buying books, and it was so much fun discovering so many different cafés across the Netherlands. Alongside this, we also travelled together and discovered Europe for the first time, exploring not only the Netherlands but also Italy and France, turning every trip into a shared adventure.

When we returned to Lebanon and the post-Erasmus depression set in, I was deeply grateful to have her by my side. We had lived the same experience, shared the same memories, and truly understood each other. 🫂

Erasmus gave me much more than academic knowledge or travel memories, it gave me a lifelong friendship. As someone once told me, the best thing that happened in the Netherlands wasn’t just Erasmus itself, but meeting my best friend."

Wat gebeurt er als je 100 jaar universiteitsgeschiedenis op film samenbrengt?

Op donderdag 5 februari sluiten we het lustrum van de universiteit af in Trianon (@bioscopenleiden) met ‘Een bewogen geschiedenis, 100 jaar Universiteit Leiden op film’. Dit is een unieke filmcompilatie met bewegend beeld vanaf 1925, gemaakt door de Leidse filmclub LVSL (@filmclub_lvsl). Van studentenleven tot beroemde gasten, van de Oranjes tot iconische momenten: het is Leiden zoals je het nog nooit gezien hebt.

Claartje Kruijff (@claartjekruijff) studeerde psychologie aan de Universiteit Leiden en is nu de nieuwe voorzitter van het @lufleiden. Ze is onder meer theoloog, psycholoog en predikant. Luc Sels is bestuursvoorzitter van @universiteitleiden en begon zijn carrière als student sociologie. Tot afgelopen zomer was hij rector van de @kuleuven. Samen openen zij het Diesfestival voor alumni.
