Story 82/300: "He Aliʻi Ka ʻĀina, He Kaua Ke Kanaka. The Land is Chief, Man is its Servant."

I can’t count how many summers I have spent in the kalo patches, weeding out loʻi and planting ʻoha for momona harvests in the coming months. My favorite memories on the farm were spent with my best friends in Koʻolau ʻĀina Momona. I can recall the sound of the tires crashing over the gravel and the laughter coming from the tents on the paepae end of the property. I was a part of the Hui Iwaiwa, which was made up of the kuaʻana in the program; fortunately, that meant spending the whole day with all of my hoapili. We spent the whole summer working in the loʻi, cooking at Hale Kealoha with Aunty Tammy, and catching heʻe out in Kaʻaʻawa with ʻAnakala Aliʻi. We harvested food and learned to live sustainably off the ʻāina. At the end of the summer, Koʻolau ʻĀina Momona hosted a big hoʻolauleʻa to celebrate the keiki and ʻohana by serving the food we harvested and by kuʻi-ing kalo on the back side of the farm near the pig shed. Kākoʻo ʻŌiwi not only instilled in me the knowledge of my kūpuna but also blessed me with memories to last a lifetime and a community that became my ʻohana.

The Chocks, Wongs, and Cubans. Together, we are the CHOWONGANS. Some of the memorable times spent at Kākoʻo are with this crew. During Covid, countless nights were spent out at the farm, planting and harvesting kalo and eating mochiko chicken and fried noodles from Times Coffee Shop as the sun went down. Uncle Kalama, my dad, and Uncle Kekoa would be strategizing the best ways to maintain healthy water flow, while all of the keiki would ride bikes and chase the chickens around the farm. And, of course, our mamas were telling stories under the tent after a day in the loʻi. Working at the farm was so fun that it eventually became my job.

In the past couple of summers, the drive along the bay has become my favorite because the destination was seeing the beautiful Koʻolau’s glowing in the morning light, and the smell of fresh dew in the breeze. Picking the pua and watering all of the new flowering plants was the first task of the morning.
